Got some Q's

2gen4runner

I have a 1991 4runner 3.0 and when the engine is cold it wont start up right away it takes a few tries of turning the key and holding it for about 3 seconds before it barely starts by spuderring alive....Does anyone know what this could be???
Also it seems like it lacks a lot of power, and i know the 3.0 are not the greatest but it feels it really really bad. i cant go over 40 up a small sloped hill....its horrible!!!

Aftermarket questions???
If i do rock crawling and use the 4runner as a daily driver, i was wandering should i just go with a 22re (i love them) or just work with what i got??? i plan on doing a lot to the rig and so far you guys have helped me out a bunch!!!!

Thanks t4r and the users ; )

Might be easily corrected with a full tune up and replacing the fuel filter. When was the last time that was done?

+1 start with a tune up
plugs
wires
fuel filter
add a can of Seafoam into your next tank, that stuff is amazing it will make your injectors act like new

I always change my oil and i always clean my air filter which is K&N.
I boought the truck last year and its been sitting and just recently i got it registered and i use it every day....I will try the sea foam, plugs and wires and distributor cap and rotor!!!
How big is the difference when you change your fuel filter????

if its clogged or filled up it will make a dramatic increase, its always worth the money for the filter. if the junk passes the fuel filter it could kill your injector and that costs a lot more then a filter.

Ok ill replace the fuel filter as well... Do you know anything about the cold start problem??? Its pretty bad!!!
Thanks

Why don't you check the ECM for error codes, that's always the first place to start.
As for cold start problems, could be a problem with the cold start injector circuit.
And the lack of power, especially on hills, could be due to a clogged cat conv.

How would i unclog my cat??? i cant take it apart because the bolts are real brittle and would break

it may be worth it to just replace it with a cheap universal cat, or just cut it out all to together.

(off topic) my check engine light came on and i dont have a diagnostic checker dude thing......i was wandering if any one new what ports i use to jumper it so i could read the code.

Im going to go to my local auto store and pick up thread sealent and cold start injector hose gaskets and try testing my cold start injector by jumpering it.....hopefully thats the problem!!!

That was my next question as to where or not the cold start injector was working. As far as the check engine light for it to go out like that I am not to supprized. Mine has done the same thing when some thing was wrong with the engine, the system is only OBD1 it is not as complex as OBD2.

So i took apart the cold start injector and cleaned the injectors, still didnt fix it there is power getting to it, and the resistence is good, but i looked and under the CSI there was a vacum hose and it seemed to be cracked and folded alot, the PO did this, i was wandering if that was the problem....here is a picture:
