It seems there is a problem with the 5.7 V8 when towing. There are complaints that the tires are making squealing noises when you first hit the gas pedal. I am not kidding; it really takes a gentle touch.

I love my 05 4Runner to death but, if they offer the 5.7, I will upgrade. I had all the intentions of a TRD supercharger. I cannot tell how disappointed I am.

It's basically the most rediculous truck I've ever driven. I'm actually afraid to floor it from a dead stop, seriously...

Try driving the Dodge Ram SRT10;I drove my friend's and floored it from a dead stop and about put it off the road in a matter of 20ft.
The Rav4 pulls harder then the Runner does and is quicker in the 1/4. (14.7 as pulled by my mom's friend's RAV down in Florida)

Me too. I was at the stealership yesterday. In the showroom, they had a Tundra 5.7L, with the hood open. I had a close look at it. I think it actually *might* fit in our 4th generation 4runners. Not sure, it would be close, as it's a big engine. It'll be dropped it into the new Lexus GX570 next year, we already know that. Toyota didn't design and produce this engine for just for the Tundra. Same as the 4.7L, we'll see it in many models to come over the years. And my bet is that it'll go into a future 4Runner.

I was talking to a friend of mine at the dealership, and i jokingly told him he should try and get toyota to put the 5.7 in the 4Runner. He laughed and said that they are going to put it in the Sequoia though! So, if anyone wants to sacrifice the 4runner's size and handling for more, your wait shouldnt be too long.

If he is right, and they put it in the sequoia, im not thinking they would put it in the 4Runner I imagine they'd do this to keep the sequoia and 4Runner far enough apart.

I'm plenty happy with the 4.7 , If I want Power ..... the blown Cobra comes out of the garage. Really dont need it in my truck as long as it as a decent powered v8. The 4.7 has impressed me with its power.

Pathgrinder to get 5.6 V-8 next year!!

Toyota will have to step up to the plate after the pathgrinder gets the that 5.6 V-8 used in the Titan. Unless you are OutRunner or have a SC 4.7 V-8, I am afraid to say the 4Runner will not be able to keep up with the Pathgrinder as far as power goes.

I would love to see that 5.7 shoehorned in there for the last year of the 4th gens in 2008.

P.S. As far as the thread goes. I stepped on the toes of a dodge Hemi 4x4 Extended Cab by a car length & 1/2 up to 65 from a stop with my V-6.

I've been averaging 15-16 mpg with the 5.7 and I buy 87 octane. With the mods I had on the 4Runner I had to buy 91 octane, so its pretty much even as far as gas prices go

Although I am a V8 nut , I would not buy anything bigger in my next 4R , it would either be the 4.7L or I would not hesitate to go to the 4.0L 6CYL.

The mfg's are making a big mistake in my part with shoe horning bigger motors into vehicles like a path finder , ect..... they will fall on there face and have crap for resale value because of gas prices.

No way would I want a 5.7 in a 4R , the Tundra or Sequoia , Land Cruiser , yes .

Put the shifter into '4' and the 4Runner will really fly! I have been driving a 4Runner for over 2 years and just realized that!

Figured out that trick very early on. When going up a steep road grade, just drop the shifter to 4 and you've got very smooth uphill power without having to jam the accel back/forth to stop the tranny fron shifting all the time.

Love the V-8 too ! Did a long trip around Utah/Nevada a few mos ago and a longer one around southern CO & NM last year, never wanted for power, even high up in the Rockies !!

when we got our V6 tundra, i got surprise on how powerful the 4.0 V6 was. not until 2 weeks ago, got my V8 T4R, it is totally different story. right after i pulled out the dealership and approaching to freeway on ramp, a jetta 1.8t was getting on my tail, on rolling speed at 40mph and we all getting on the gas together, smoked that 1.8t by WAY WAY far.... i realized he tried to catch up very hard from my rearview mirror. when he got up to my side, i did it again, lol. so much fun in my new V8 now.

new H3 is going to have a V8 real soon. forget the specs but it should be about 300hp or so. as mentioned, the Pathfinder will/has a V8... Toyota has got to up the ante w/ it's HP with the quickness...

I concur. The H3 desperately needs a bigger engine to haul it's mass around. Pathfinder sales are low and Nissan may feel the larger engine may give them some market advantage.

The current 4.7L V8 is more than enough engine for the 4Runner. As Northof49 states, you wouldn't want to tow more than the current ratings indicate with a relatively short wheelbase SUV.

Factoring in current performance and predicted gas prices, the 4.7L V8 is a good match for the 4Runner - as is the V6. I would rather have a V6 powered 4Runner than the H3, Pathfinder, or any other midsize SUV regardless of engine choice. There is more to a good on-road/off-road SUV and what we expect from them than horsepower.

What makes the 4.7 special is that it is a true truck engine tuned to produce a lot of torque low in the RPM range and the amount of torque. If you look at the competitors V8s they tune for more HP and less torque. The 5.7 is in a class of its own. The beast class!

maybe a dumb question here, will the V8 runs better on higher octane than regular 87 grade? just curious. cuz i know toyota "recommended" but not "required" high octane like acura/honda. anyone can tell difference in performance between high/low octane gas?
