GPS and mounting

Anyone mount a handheld GPS unit in their truck yet, especially 4th gen owners? If so where? Pics would be great!

Does anyone have the Garmin 60CS or 76 CS models? And if you do what do you think of them?

I have a Garmen etrex vista and love it.
Got it from "thegpsstore.com" I wedge it between the dash and A pillar - I have been looking for a good mount like the Garmen bean bag type mount. I like when it is in eye site and you don't have to look down. Not looking for anything perm. Ionly use it in the rig on longer trips. Sorry not pix.
 
i have the magellan roadmate, and it comes with a suction cup mount with extension arm. attach it to the windshield, and it comes to the dash just above the radio.
 
Mounted mine in the same location with the removable mount. Easy to take out the GPS when not in use and I can upgrade on this mount to one of the new color ones sometime. I just use batteries and recharge them. They last a whole day on the batteries (NiMH) in the GPS V.

thanks for the pics. bulldog-yota, I take it your gps mount works well on that dash surface? I thought those mounts might have a problem b/c of the rough surface, I guess not

The Garmin mount works fine. I use it for my Etrex. It comes with two types of sticky adhesive pads. I used the non-permanent adhesive pad and it has stayed in place for a year while holding the Etrex and bouncing over rough roads.

I also use the RAM suction mount with the long arm. Works like a champ and allows for quick relocation to change the view. The Garmin mount easily connects to the RAM ball mount. I have photos of this mounting sprinkled thru my different posts here.

The Garmin 276 is the must have GPS according to those that use their GPS for off-roading.
 
I second RM Lemke's recommendation. I have a Garmin Etrex Legend, that I use on my bike, my kayak and my 4Runner, just by changing the mount - a suction cup on the windshield for the Runner

Bean Bag

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 76CS and the bean bag works very well for normal driving around. I am not all that fond of gluing crap to my dash.

The only downside to the beanbag and a tall profile GPS like my 76CS is that whenever I'm offroading I have to be careful because it likes doing a nice little dash dive when things get steep.

Overall I love this unit though, with the road kit this sucker rocks! Good directions, good maps, and a nice color screen to boot.

Incidentally, before I bought this unit I asked how much the DVD Nav system was - guy at the dealer told me ~$4700. I followed that up by asking how much was the V8 in my SE and he said ~$4500. That's right, that DVD Nav system costs more than the engine!!!
 
I have the Garmin Street Pilot 3 and use the bean bag mount. In my previous vehicle, I used the adhesive based holder, but have found that 1. ) You need one for each vehicle you intend to use the GPS and 2.) they tend to be a real PIA to remove if the need arises. I think that the $25 spent on the Garmin bean bag mount was one of the best purchases I made. Surpringly enough, it tends to keep it's place even on the *mild* terrain that I encounter. Also, it is rather convient to take it off the dash, throw it in the back and run a quick errand.

Velcro. Small strip of the hook side on the dash in front of the speaker grill, and a matching piece of the loop side on the Garmin GPS III Plus. I bounce around in the bush for weeks on end, and it never dislodges. Cheap too!
 
I removed that "useless" fold-down plastic door from beneath the temperature controls of my 03 4R. Then I was able to mount my GPS' flexible arm with suction cups to the flat area behind where the door was. The end result puts my Magellan Meridian Color a bit below eye level, but out of direct sunlight and maximizes the intensity of the color screen. Only one temperature dial is hard to get too, but I seldom use it, so the configuration works for me!

Does anyone who mounted their GPS unit at eye level on the top of the dash have problems with the sun? It seems like a good place so you don't have to look down while driving, but seems like it would also get lmore glare.

i have my ique placed on the dash. it's attached to the traction pad and so far so good, there has been no glare.

Mine is fine in the sun, little glare. However with my sunglasses on and going through shade it i hard to read sometimes, unless I turn on the back light.
