GPS Group buy - Magellan? - Garmin?

So for the past few months I have been tossing the idea about a GPS group buy.

Magellan? - Garmin?

A handheld for camping/hiking vs a windshield mounted one?

I am leaning towards something handheld - Since it could be used for vehicular navigation AND hiking vs trying to use a windshield mounted one for hiking.

Any thoughts?

Ideas?

This thread was created for discussion on a possible brand/type of GPS.

No guarantees when the GB will happen, just need a specific model/type of GPS to get my foot in the door with vendors..

Very interested! I wish I had something to contribute but I don't have a lot of experience but I am hoping to hear!
 
Definitely been eyeing the Garmin inReach Explorer+ as a SPOT alternative for way out there 4x4 and backpacking. Would be interested in a group buy for sure.

There are probably a number of current/prospective Spot users (myself included) that have started looking at the InReach as an alternative to the ever-increasing annual cost of service on the Spot. Personally I like the option to only buy service as needed on the InReach, but more importantly I want the ability to have 2 way communication in the event of an emergency. Thankfully I haven't needed to use the emergency feature on the Spot, but more than once the thought has crossed my mind that if I needed to use it I would have no real idea how soon help would be on the way.

let me clear this up.

With INreach, you can pay month to month..?

and with spot you have to pay year to year..?

That kinda sucks cause not all of us are out there all year long..

Yep, thats one of the big upsides for me on the InReach. You have a choice to run annual subscriptions for a slightly lower monthly price if you're active year round, or you can turn it on when you need it and pay a slightly higher monthly rate. Details are on this page, about half way down

Spot only offers annual plans, and my last subscription renewal ran ~$170. Spot shows a monthly price, but it requires a 12 month subscription term.

Not sure on Spot, but yes with the InReach you can turn it on and off 30 days at a time. Once you turn it on it has to stay on for 30 days. But nice since my truck blew up I will turn it back off after the 30 days are up since I activated it again. It's a cool unit especially if you link it to a BT tablet. I used mine..well...for a day with a Galaxy Tab A. Was awesome. SOOOOO much easier to see on the Earthmate app than the tiny little screen. Plus...being able to text wherever is a bonus. I may buy one for my dad for Xmas since he is getting old and loves to hike.
 
This thread convinced me to pull the trigger on a Garmin inReach Explorer+ last night after putting it off for multiple years / trips. Now the girlfriend can rest easy knowing she can get one final text message from me saying "I'm dead." Flippancy aside, the biggest thing for me with the inReach unit is being able to send specific messages. Sometimes I don't need an SOS, I just want to spend an extra 2 days in the backcountry because things are going great, but there's no way to relay that with a SPOT. Also, the 30-day subscription model w/ .50 cent additional texts once you go over the small limit for "freebies" for the cheapest monthly plan is still a fantastic deal.
 
Definitely interested. Hope we can get this going. Otherwise I'll have to pay full price at the end of next month =[
