the best NAV app/tool (by far) is Backcountry Navigator Pro for Android which works great on Tablets .... although I am curious what you all will pick.

While the NAV functionality of the InReach is cool (and I'm definitely getting it), the main draw for me to this product is the Satellite Text capability with month to month subscriptions.

This is the same draw myself, plus it needs to be able to take a beating on the trail/river/etc. I have a Delorme PN40 that is showing age and constantly in water or bouncing through lava fields. Nothing my phone or table will withstand.

Never picked up SPOT due to subscription and something additional to carry. Integrate the two and I'm happy. Plus, my Dad is getting up there in age and still venturing down every back trail across the west to find something new. A little peace of mind knowing he can communicate in the event of a wrong turn or a slip on a trail.

I do use both Gaia and Backcountry apps myself, but they have their time and place as does a rugged GPS in my bag.

Just received my inReach Explorer+ yesterday and got it registered. As an FYI, the "Freedom" plans -- where you only pay for 30-day increments -- is subject to a $24.95 annual fee. So I dropped that $24.95 plus another $14.95 for a 30-day contract. A little speedy upfront, but I'm more than happy to pay that annual fee once a year, along with the 3-4 30-day contracts I'll probably purchase a year, if it not only saves my life but allows me to communicate 2-way as well.

The vendors that can source Garmin -

They can do a group buy on the units.

But not on the Inreach.

Apparently Garmin only pushes the Inreach thru large scale companies - Amazon, BestBuy, Cabelas, etc.

I don't know if Magellan still makes handheld GPS units, but they do make some nice looking automotive units designed for off road driving (TRX Series). Garmin is the main game in town for Handhelds these days, I for one would be interested in a discount on the InReach line as I am looking for a replacement for my Spot.

Definitely been eyeing the Garmin inReach Explorer+ as a SPOT alternative for way out there 4x4 and backpacking. Would be interested in a group buy for sure.

My vote is Garmin.

Don't forget the Rino series radios+GPS for hikers and hunters, those things are great.

Plus the bigger the better for the automotive 6" minimum or 7" is even better!!

There are probably a number of current/prospective Spot users (myself included) that have started looking at the InReach as an alternative to the ever-increasing annual cost of service on the Spot. Personally I like the option to only buy service as needed on the InReach, but more importantly I want the ability to have 2 way communication in the event of an emergency. Thankfully I haven't needed to use the emergency feature on the Spot, but more than once the thought has crossed my mind that if I needed to use it I would have no real idea how soon help would be on the way.

Definitely interested. Hope we can get this going. Otherwise I'll have to pay full price at the end of next month =[

Im starting to think, that the reason the vendor made that a requirement..is so I wont be lying and run off with an inreach at discounted price

and never coming back or having anyone else make a purchase.
