Hello,

New to here, and today new to me my 1998 SR5 black on tan cloth, 206k $3900 out the door from a nice dealership in the country in Va. Perfect tan cloth interior, everything works, however some issues I want to ask about.

1) The truck dies after cranking unless I tap the gas. Runs and idles fine though.....
2) The truck shut off making a left turn in parking lot of dmv lol
3) I need a pass side front fender chrome trim peice (mines missing)
4) Whats a rough going rate on having the timing belt done? this has a 91k sticker and nobody knows since then, currently 206k

Other then these things, so far so good, I spent 2 months night and day riding craigslist and autotrader and checking local dealerships for 50miles in all directions, I drive 112miles each way this mourning to get this truck and I feel like I got a great deal. Simular trucks nearby are 6-10k and some are beat to ****, mines better then most I've seen.

What do yall think? I'm in northern Va outside of DC.

I know the feeling about scowering craigslist. I searched for 3 weeks every day at every source until I found my deal. I drove 300 miles up to Maryland to pick up my 98 sr5 with 158k miles for $5k.

Congrats. To your points:
1) What Baja said. It might be worthwhile to run some seafoam through the engine too, change the oil, replace, all that normal stuff before you go tearing into it too much. Also, try cleaning the throttle body, it's always a good idea.
2) Mine did that once too. Never had any problems since, so maybe hold off on that one too until you have done the regular maintenance and see if it does it again.
3) You can troll the classifieds for someone parting one with chrome, or hit the salvage yards. For body pieces, really decide if it is worth it before buying a new piece. I tore the front piece of my wheel flare on the pass side off this last winter; $40 for a new one, but doesn't seem worth it to me.
4) I think a good price at a shop is about $500, most guys seem to get quoted about $800. Lots of guys here do it themselves, so if you are mechanically inclined, it might be something you could do after spending some time tinkering with smaller things to familiarize yourself with this engine (like spark plugs/wires, etc)

BTW, read the tutorial and reference sticky at the top of this forum. It has almost every link you will ever need, including write-ups for all the stuff I mentioned. It should be the first place you go when you have a question.

I don't have a clue what's wrong with the truck.....but welcome aboard and make sure you post pics of this thing! ;)
 
I paid 375 at a local Toyota dealership 2 years ago for a timing belt change with no coupons. Other dealerships quotes between 425-700. I feel like a got a really good deal.

That must be only the timing belt.

OP, check out the timing belt threads here (read the sticky), as alot of guys go with a kit that replaces alot of stuff, not just the timing belt.

I will check those threads, and look into the throttlebody cleaning, and I will get a pic soon as I can.

When cold or warm it seems, turn the key, it fires, let go, it dies. Turn the key, tap the gas it fires and stays, idles fine with and without air on, but it did cut off that one time I mentioned, not again yet. This issue is happening randomly, not often either just here and there.

I feel I did good, and yes I do most of my own work, i've rebuilt and modded a few cars myself, just don't want to anymore, no garage in townhouse sucks :bash:

I figured it was like $400-$800 on the timing belt, I guess when I start calling around locally I'll know more.

Thanks for ideas on the fender trim. It seems I have a headlight/grill black headlight trim? to straighten out, some zip ties holding corner of grill lol. Must be related to the chrome missing on fender, but the fender is perfect otherwise and is original. The core support is bent and has hammer marks so at some point i'll try to get that replaced and straighten up the front end.

I also went by my local toyota stealership today to check on the recalls and this truck only qualifies for the rear suspension issue and it was done in 2002.
I also got the service records from them free, no timing belt done by them. The truck was bought new locally in rural va, then traded in to another dealer there then bought again and then traded to my little dealership.

Looks like I got 3rd's but ohwell, its my 3rd gen now :trophy:
