I did mine last weekend blue to ground works like a champ.

Meaning you want to do lots of donuts? lol


If that's what you actually are shooting for (donuts in the snow), then you'll love the locker in the snow. If you're just wanting traction, and to drive in a straight line...then don't use the locker.

My 78 Land cruiser had no donut action in snow It should be no different with 4run..
Now if you stomp on gas yes be prepared for some circles.

I guess I should have qualified that a bit better. The locker helps in deep snow, or obviously when just one rear wheel isn't getting any traction because it's buried. But on "slippery" snow surfaces, having the rear locked will kick the rear end out one direction or the other much much easier than NOT having it locked. During both normal driving, and using my tow strap to help people get unstuck, I've found the locker doesn't help at ALL in the snow. I think most people will agree.

Oh no disagreement if your talking a couple inches yes some slip will be present...especially with slush pack below.
I snowboard in West VA roads get filled with the flakes rear lock will come pretty handy.

What are you expecting to happen? A locker to magically appear?


EDIT: I should be nicer, you simply aren't understanding the way this all works. This mod allows you to use your factory e-locker in 2hi, 4hi and 4lo....instead of JUST in 4lo. But you don't have an elocker. So doing this mod would be like waxing your snow skies for a trip to bermuda. You could ground that wire....but ain't no locker going to engage when one don't exist.

So is there a difference in how you ground this?

I have a 97 Limited I was going to do but then saw the post that indicated you needed to ground going away from the plug, as opposed to grounding on the plug side as per the original post.

Hey BigNate, I just did this mod yesterday on my 97 limited. I was also a little confused, I first grounded the plug side wire but this engaged the front diff right away. So I then cut it off the plug side and grounded the wire on the harness side. This worked great...but with a bad side effect, it disabled the transmission overdrive. So today I cut the wire and wired in an oem style switch inline, so when I want to use my diff lock in 2hi or 4hi I just hit the additional switch then my factory diff lock switch and it works great.

Thanks. I was confused and the more I read the less I thought I was keeping it straight.

There are times I'd like to have it available in hi for slinging mud out of the tread or in snow where some wheel speed actually helps.

For those of you thinking of trying it locked on-road, know that you'll get some noticable push.:lookout: Not a big deal if you keep out of the skinny pedal while turning. It will be harder on the tires as well.

Can the RR diff lock be disengaged at any speed?

Also, does anyone still have the problem of O/D being turned off after doing the blue wire mod?

i would guess you could disengage it at any speed. but engaging it i would be worried about over 10 or 15 because everything is moving so fast in the rear end.

i have had this mod done for a few years now. (have used it) and no problems with the O/D

Right. I wouldn't want to engage over 5 mph.

I hope it doesn't happen to me. Will do this soon. It is strange that the only a handful of ppl had this problem after performing the mod.

So why is my ABS light coming on after this? Anyone?

By the way it works great also in soft dirt. The ass end of the truck sank in the dirt and was digging deep. Good stuff!

Just when the Locker is going. That is it. As soon as it is off and I have it back in 2wh no locker it is off.

Now I lost over drive? Is it because of the blue wire Mod? I'm running about 3100rpm @60 now.

Someone help please! Am I'm going to have to hook the blue wire back up?
