Grey Wire Mod For 4Runners

Bump - this is on my list of things to do to my wife's truck, what's the dealio with how this affects overdrive? Has anyone with an automatic done this mod and NOT had to put the ground on a switch?

Did this mod today. Those little wires were the worst part. Getting them stripped and crimped was by far the hardest part. Worked exactly as described. Very cool. Easiest mod so far.

Well... Figured that I would just do this while I was rewiring my radio and putting my CB in. Locker engages at any point now. Gotta actually get out and test it tomorrow.

I had no problems with shift patterns. My locker took a minute to engage but after getting it licked the first time with a clunk, it goes in a lot easier.

Did this Mod on Saturday, will not shift any higher than 3rd gear. It def feels like OD is disabled but the light is not on. I tried connecting them back togather and did not fix the issue......... Maybe I didn't get a good connection on the wires

Okay I finally put all wires back togather and that's exactly what it was. OD was being disabled and the light was not indicating it. So now apparently I'm going to have to wire in a ground switch when I want to use my E-locker in diff positions of my choice. My previous 98 limited did not have this problem when I did blue wire mod, My 99 Limited does......... Think that should be some kind of disclaimer added to the Mod Sticky

I have a 99 limited and want to do this mod but it seems like it may or may not work. has anyone else done this mod with a 99 limited without wiring a switch?

This guy did! The locker switch works as a switch. The only problem is that if you accidentally hit the switch you locker engages and if you are on dry pavement things could go boom!

I was holding off on this until I sorted out problems with my 4WD not engaging. Did it in about 5 minutes in the driveway. Test drove. Works great! Thanks for the mod!

Grey mod

I have a 98 limited 4x4 I try my rear locker it seems to work in 4h with no problems. Is that good or bad no wire mods.

Oh the resurrection-
Did anyone ever figure out the O/D off issue other than wiring in a switch? Or why it causes it on some trucks and not others? I, too, am a victim of the O/D problem -

Resurection 2; did this mod today on my 97 T4R 5 speed, blue/red stripe wire only, maybe the easiest mod yet; RR diff lock now works like a charm in 2WD, 4WD LO & HI. :llama:

Just did this on my 00 limited automatic. Locks up in 2wd, 4wd high, and 4wd low. Transmissions shifts into o/d as normal. In short, this worked as well as the gray wire mod did in my Taco! Thanks!

I just did this on my 1999 Limited and it worked just fine- no overdrive issues as some have stated. I only grounded the blue/red wire. It can engage the RR Diff Lock in any transfer case condition as long as it is below 5mph now. Stays engaged past 5mph. Donuts in gravel are so easy!
