I sometimes run just my locker to see how far I can get before going into 4x4 and I have been asked if it was safe to take it out of 4x4 yet and told them I had been out for the last couple of miles and you get this reaction :wow2:

Will doing this damage the diff or anything? Why did they put these limits on it in the first place, just to keep people from driving on the road with the lock on?

yes doing this mod allows you to lock it in 2wd with out haveing to be in 4low and yes it wont hurt it if you go over 5mph

I don't think there is a definitive speed or anything, but I don't think it is safe to have the diff lock on at high speeds. Any differential movement in the vehicle is going to cause a tire to break traction or at least put a lot more force against its tracton to the road. Loosing traction means losing a some of your control.

Differential lockers increase traction while crawling and decrease traction while driving.

The grey (blue) wire mod is generally useless in my opinion...other than just having more options in your rig and another notch on the mod belt! Realisticaly though, I have never seen a reason to use the locker in any gear other than 4 low. "maybe" I would use it if I was ever too lazy to put it in neutral to change to 4lo, and I just wanted to get unstuck from some snow and ice...maybe...but that's it.

If you are asking if it is safe for the vehicle, I am no help.

Yes, it's a safety feature to keep people from driving at highway speeds with their diff lock on

From the info I gathered the diff won't lock until you drop below 5mph if you engage it above 5mph. After you slow down to 5mph it will engage and you can speed back up and it will stay locked

This is gonna be a fun mod. I can't believe I just found it. And not that 4runners need to be going over 100 anyway, but the locker wouldn't make it anymore unstable. I've had plenty of cars with spools and gone over 150 with them safely! A spool basically keeps the two axle shafts locked together, forever. Not good unless it's drag only.

Anyone look into front diff locks? Real 4x4!

So I am still a little confused about one point here. I haven't done the mod yet. I tried putting the TC in 4LO, then engaging the diff lock, then shifting the TC back into 4hi, and the diff lock light started blinking again and it sure didn't feel like I was locked anymore.

From what people said here, the locker shouldn't disengage when I shift from 4LO into 4HI.

factory only works in 4lo do this mod and it will work in 2wd 4hi 4lo

I have made this change on my 96 Limited and as soon as the Blue/red is tied to ground, you can hear the FRONT AXLE engage, whether the 4wd button is set to 2wd or not.

I assume that the locker would also engage, but it does not matter since you can't drive around in 4wd.

Did your vehicle have the push button 4wd, or something else?

I know that I should be able to find the switch on the transfer case and short it there, but it would be nice to leave the connections under the vehicle alone.

Any ideas?

I had the same issue when I did mine last night. Then realized the problem. You have to ground the wire running from the clip. Not the end coming into the plug. I did the end coming to the plug and diff lock flashed and was locked in 4wd all the time. Once i grounded the other end it started working perfectly.

1). It's no harm in engaging your rear locker or 4wd hi system while moving at any speed right?

2). It's fine to ride off road with locker engaged making plenty of turns since traction is not as great as pavement right?

I believe the answers are all "yes" but I'd like to get confirmation on that.

I think the answer to 1) is NO. You don't want to engage this at any speed. The safety feature is there for a reason, to protect the diff from the driver.

Really, everything I read said that it disengages the locker if you exceed,...some said 5mph, some said 15mph

might have already been covered BUT to answer this: no, the locker does not disengage when you exceed 5 MPH. It is to prevent you from turning the locker on while moving fast. I have gone over 5 MPH plenty of times with locker on.


I agree with Elton H. The safety feature is to prevent it from being engaged while driving and in IMO it should be left at its factory setting.

The way its set up from the factory you can not engage the locker unless your in 4lo and going under 5mph.
Once you splice that wire you can engage it at anytime- 2wd,4wd etc. When I did mine I left the green/orange(speed control) alone. So I still have to drive slow when its locked, but it works well.

Also some have asked on here if its a blue wire mod or grey wire mod- the "Grey" wire mod came from the tacoma guys as their wire is grey and our wire is blue.
