Grinding noise while in reverse

!998 4Runner Limited 4WD with auto transmission . 168K miles. This has happened to me three times in the last three weeks. After starting the truck and backing out of a parking spot, it sounds like a grinding noise coming from the left front wheel area. The truck moves fine but the grinding noise is like fingernails on a chalkboard. It only lasts for a second or two and then goes away. It happened one other time while parking and going forward . It is always when the wheels are turned to the left. It is also in 2WD when this happens. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

It almost sounds like the parking pawl. Did you ever put your truck in park before it is completely stopped? That is exactly what it sounds like.
Does anyone know something about these? :peace:

I have never done it with this truck. I would guess that almost everyone has accidentally done it while in a hurry. Of course, I have been driving for 40 years. I appreciate members who try to help me with my problems. I don't appreciate childish answers. If you can't help, please don't waste everyone's time with foolish replies. Thanks for understanding.

I've noticed this as well maybe 3 or 4 times since owning the truck in the last month. Always as I'm backing up and turning the wheels to the right to back out. Not sure if it has much to do with steering or not. It doesn't sound horrible, but not what I would consider normal. The 4R is new to me and the first of this type of vechicle I've ever owned so I don't have much for reference.
 
Mine is the exact opposite, it is when I have the wheels turned left. I was thinking CV joint. Does the CV joint turn when in 2 Wheel Drive ? It doesn't happen very often, maybe once a week or something like that. Would an ABS sensor make any kind of noise?

Yes they do. CVs usually clunk when turning, and usually under load. Go to a parking lot and put it in 4HI. Turn the front wheels and give it gas. If it is a CV you should hear it. Try turning both directions, forward and reverse.

It could be balljoints.
It could be the "worn out brake" sensor on the front pads.

Thanks for the info Mr. Gerdo. I will check it out tomorrow after I finish the waterpump and timing belt job. Can you tell me where the brake pad sensor is located?

Never mind about the brake sensor. You mean the part of the shoe that contacts the rotor when the brakes are almost worn. I am leaning toward the CV joint.
