Grinding Sound

New to this forum... Glad to have another Toyota! Just purchased a 2000 T4R Limited 2WD, 3.4L with the auto trans, and have found a few minor issues. The one that has me stumped is the grinding sound I hear when I back off of the gas pedal. Can't tell if it's coming from the rear axle, or from the transmission. Not too loud, but noticeable. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I would check the fluids for both, and possibly change them. Look for signs of clutch material in the trans, or metal flake in both. If its not loud I wouldn't worry about it too too much.

You could run it while jacked up/ lifted on a hoist (be safe!) and listen to the trans and rear end with a stethoscope.
