Ground Loop Isolator??

I've installed my Sirius Starmate replay recently using the aux input and the cig lighter for power. I like using the aux input over the FM modulator because it completely eliminates static. The only problem is now I have the alternator whine/noise/interference coming through the speakers.

I've searched the threads and keep finding references to getting a ground loop isolator to eliminate the interference. The problem is that I can only find isolators that have rca connections. How would I use those connections considering I am only using the mini cable for my signal? Is there another type of ground loop isolator for a mini jack?

Just go to Radio Shack and get an adapter that turns RCA into 1/8" phono plugs and you will be good to go. I used to have a problem with connecting a presentation projector up to a computer causing a ground loop hum. The computer was using standard phono jacks to connect to a sound system. I had to buy the adapter to use the ground loop isolator and everything worked well after that.

Well I tried using one on those from Radio Shack. It helped a little bit but I still have a distinct buzz when palying my XM. It did eliminate the alternator noise that changed with the rpm's. I have the Scion HU and a PIE adaptor. Tried a "Monster" cable from adaptor to the XM unit and that didn't help either.
The XM is powered from my cig lighter but I hardwired it under the console trim. I tried running to a decent ground to a piece connected to the frame at some point under the AC controls.

It is driving me crazy. I tried connecting my daughter's Ipod while it was powered by batteries and do not get the buzz so I am guessing it is from the power connection.

I would love to get this solved. Let me know if you have any luck with it.

I hear some whine, but it's hardly noticable, so I'm not doing anything about it.

If your whine is unbearable, then you're probably going to have to hardwire the power directly to the battery for best results. Use a relay and ACC wire to trigger the relay.

I think I'm using the same ground point as you, so as long as that's tight, it shouldn't be a problem.

It sucks that monster cable didn't solve your problem. That stuff isn't cheap.

Have you tried to go in set up menu and adjsut the output gains on the unit?

try another power source. The voltage you get at the lighter is fine, but you might try finding another ground. When I install I'll use the 12V from the cig lighter if its convienient, but most of the time I go right to the ignition wire and groud it right to metal.

Exactly! The power from the cig lighter isn't very 'clean'. One of the best things you can do is do as mentioned by tarheel, or put a solid ground on the cig lighter. Personally I never use the 12V access circuit for audio use, only gauges/lights. A ground loop iso. will mask the problem...and probably won't do that very well...if you MUST use a cig. lighter type adaptor to use your iPod components, try wiring in a new one (with a clean source/ground) and just place it under the dash...then you'll have a completely stealth install.
