Group Buy; Whitson Metalworks Full length rack!

So I've been working with Josh, Whitson Metalworks, on a group buy for his 3rd gen full length rack. The price is 625 powdercoated, or 575 bare metal. If we can get enough people (20 committed buyers) the price will go down a tad, not much, but about 600 for the powdercoated version. There will be additional charges for light tabs, extra bars etc...

Im making this thread to gauge interest and to see how many people we can get on board. In comparison to a Gobi, this is a great deal on a quality rack.

If you do commit, half of the rack will need to be paid upfront, then the other half once the rack is built. Shipping is also on your dime. SouthEast Freight ships to the south east region of the US for $90. Other parts of the country could be a pain in the rear since the rack weighs about 65lbs and is quite large.

I agree that I wish the price could come down more, but he is a one man band and again this is with them powdercoated. Before he was going to sell them with a DIY bedliner for $625. His powdercoater needs atleast 10 so he can do it at this price...

All looks good Scat, and yes i know the 25 doesn't sound like much of a discount but as stated, I do it all myself (except the powder) and am absorbing some of the powder coating cost to put out a better, possibly more desirable product. Also, these are built with the exact same materials- .065 1 inch tube and 3/4x9 expanded sheet metal, and are one solid piece. Scat, I'm going to just build in light tabs into the standard rack since I'm sure everyone would want lights in theirs.

I wasn't trying to insult the discount, just that for $25 off, if someone likes your rack, they should just buy it. I can't imagine the $25 would sway anyone to order your's over someone else's, or be the deciding factor to buy a $625 rack.

These group buy threads are very difficult to make successful; I have seen so many of them start up, sit around for 6 months, and never actually get ordered, I'd rather see you just advertise here and sell some period.

It looks like a great rack, and since you are doing it yourself, could people order special tabs to be added to mount other things, like a shovel, hi-lift, spare tire, etc? Those options could be a great selling point.

absolutely, i'll weld anything needed into the rack, just pm with any ideas of your own you may want in a rack and we can figure it out. i'm easy to deal with.

You should be able to ship those anywhere in the country for $100 or less using greyhound express. its not quite as convenient since the person has to go to the nearest greyhound station to pick it up, but it saves a lot of money on shipping. thats how i ship bumpers, side skirts, body kits and other large items, those typically only cost about $65-70 to go from cali to the east coast, which is super cheap for a giant body kit box. the next option up is freight and thats about $250-300 and is even more of a pain with the semi truck and all. greyhound is pretty much the best way to ship large things like this. just thought this tip might help, that way it wouldnt matter what part of the country people are in, and even some of the canadian guys might be able to receive it across the border, install it and drive back across with no fees

greyhound: mixed emotions. ive been using them for the smaller roof racks for months now and their rates are certainly going up, the last one i shipped (72 inches long) cost me $110, and theres no guarantee of a timely delivery, i'm battling with them now for one i shipped to NY, 22 DAYS ago! and they cant tell me where its at. they seem to really care less too. lol, thats a sore subject right now.

ah. thats no good. i've personally never had any problems more that it being a couple days late. though they dont offer any type of real tracking or anything, which i have definitely fretted over before. i hope the rack arrives soon, best of luck with them! :ybrick:

I'm interested. Hoping for a better discount. I want to put 4 lights on the front, at least two on each side, and two to four in the back. Definitely a nice idea to add a wind faring, limb riser mounts, shovel mount, hi lift mount, etc... we'll see when the time comes, I suppose.

I love the half and half payment idea, Shrockworks was nice enough to do that for their group buy and it made payment astronomically easier.

Side note: I'm definitely willing to be the SoCal shipping/pickup spot for racks, I have no problem storing them indoors. Anything in the interest of saving some extra cash.

Hey Im wondering if it's gonna save significantly more on the shipped cost if no expanded sheet metal was included.

It adds to the overall weight of the rack, and also that's something I can buy locally and weld myself....Also in bare metal.

No pics right now of mounting points but they are fool proof, one hole will line up with one of the track attaching bolts, I can supply the longer bolts, and another will line up with the sliding rail insert. I always mount using only the sliding inserts and have never had issues but for safteys sake I'll give the option to use two fasteners at each mounting point, except the front of course. I hope that makes sence, inlaws in town for wifes graduation (finally) so no garage time for me this weekend. And I finally have a simple plexi wind fairing design nailed down, will post up when the coast is clear. Also, the expanded metal is only 15-20 pounds maybe, the size is more of the issue than weight.
