Sure, I could do one of those, for a 3rd gen mind you. Only I don't like all the smaller tubes they have, no doubt some very thin wall stuff piched at the ends and welded in. I would prefer the expanded metal on a sturdy base.

First of all, great looking racks for a good price! I saw the suggestion for a flat rack similar to that offered by BajaRack, and thought of a suggestion as well.

I don't post a lot, but do lurk quite a bit. One thing I've noticed over the years in regards to roof racks is quite a bit of interest in low profile mounts. A lot of people already run the Rola, Yakima, etc racks that just mount to the factory crossbars. Every so often, it seems a thread pops up about low profile mounts. A few people have made some up with bolts and unistrut or other materials. It seems that a lot of people don't have the time or want to make their own and would probably be interested in someone who will make some mounts. And based on your work and the way your racks are mounted directly to the roof tracks, I figured this could be something easily done by you and beneficial for members that already have racks.

Granted, I have no idea what all would be involved or if it would even be something worthwhile for you to do. Just a thought I had while following some of your threads.

Exactly. Full-length, like your "normal" rack, including the mesh bottom, but without the sides. It would still need two attachment points in the roof rails, and the "feet" near the front. Approx. cost of that?

It would have to be flat, like the link you posted. Without a top rail there's no way it will hold any type of contour really. That being said, the front would likely sit a tad higher, but being a single layer it wouldn't be as visually imposing as a full on rack. I can see doing something like that for around 375. Shipping would be the same as a normal rack since the size will still be, well, big.

not trying to hi-jack the thread..but what about a gobi ladder? i've always wanted one but dont wanna dish out 200 bucks. I'm no welder..but this custom rack you made is beautiful. I just wanna see a gobi ladder replica of this. if you can do. count me first on the list and thats a promise (considering the price is cheaper than gobi's

if you can get your hands on a ladder and see how it mounts..do you think its possible? i know for the mounting..no drilling is required..more like a clamp.

I think its adhesive on a plate for the top and a sort of clamp on the bottom.

Very cool. Flat is fine. Preferred, in fact. I could source my own fairing, but I'd need to know the dimensions of that front section. Oh, I also need to retain the full function of the sunroof (and be able to escape through the roof if necessary). I'll PM you once I get the go-ahead on this! :tongue:

Great looking rack. Looks quite similar to the Gobi Stealth rack but substancially less cost. Does the front have any mounts for lights? what are the dimensions of the openings in the front? Trying to gauge what size lights would fit if I wanted to add some. probably be limited to the slim IPF's or PIAAs or LED's.

What are the dimensions of the basket area? trying to measure out for some RotoPax fuel cans.

Also, I know the rack would ship from the southeast but any idea on shipping costs to a business with loading dock in California? Zip would be 94577.

good question waketek. i did a quote through southeastern freight (whom i use) and for one rack-approx 65lbs it would be about 160, for two racks-approx 130lbs its 175 and for 3 racks around 210lbs it went to $260. obviously the math favors the weight of two racks if theres another interested member in socal.

A few of the guys from California have expressed interest and shipping more than one at a time would be best. Light openings in the front are about 3.5 inches high, inside. Yes, I build light tabs into the front. Basket area measures approx 40*54. Check back through the thread for other pictures and info.

Gotcha. Im actually in the San Francisco bay in northern California which is about 5 hours north of LA. It would make it kind of tough to ship to socal then have to drive and pick up.

I'll definitely be looking out for updates though. You have built a beautiful rack for sure and i may have to put this on my list of future additions.

Going to order a ton of materials and build a handful of racks, also going to work on a 4th gen rack. If anyone wants to put a deposit down on one hit me up and I'll tag one for you, this batch should take a few weeks to get built. It's trail riding and camping season!
