Grunting Noise

Good morning! I hope someone has an info that can solve this mysterious sound.
My 4RunnerToyota:
2000 model year
Limited Gold package
I am original owner
177,000 miles
Color: Desert Dune

About 6 months ago, I noticed a Grunting sound coming from the front of the car, at about 3-5 mph, only after starting the engine (which means, I never hear it any other time). This is NOT a metal grinding noise. At first, I thought it was coming from the wind shield wiper motor (still haven't ruled that out). Also,Like most, my power antennae has gotten bent and no longer goes up and down, but I do hear the motor running when I shut the engine off.

This grunting (or farting, is what my son calls it) is only about 3 seconds long, and can happen in drive or reverse, but ONLY after starting the engine, then taking off. The sound can be faint or loud (have not figured what causes that). Any help out there? Thanks!

Sounds like the ABS pump performing it's self test/prime. It happens after start up after applying and releasing the brakes for the first time. Noise will seem to come from the passenger side.

This is normal. I hear it in both my 3rd Gens but my 98 is a little louder. What I didn't know is what was causing it. The ABS pump doing it's self check sounds good to me.

So, for the first 19+ years, I didn't hear the ABS self check, she said with a smile....

If that is what it is, I am ok with it. But when a new grunt/groan starts, I pay attention. No clicks, a release of pressure, if you will.

Yes I would agree with you on the ABS being a church mouse for 19 years now I noise. Keep your ears open. Something is making that noise and hopefully you will found out exactly what it is. :) maybe it is that ABS. I know I am not hearing any noises out of mine. But most of mine are the older variety.

Ditto on the ABS pump.

I've heard said noise on our 2000 ABS-equipped 4Runner, but never on our non-ABS 2000 and 1999 base models. (His, hers, and backup.)

On the other hand, recently I've been seeing newspaper stories about the spread of feral hogs...

Yes those hogs are spreading their areas.

I never saw a 3rd gen without abs. So I didn't know those existed. But 2wd are on the rare side around here as well. :) base models don't have abs. Good to know.
