GTA Car Kit (Pure Bluetooth) Problems

My friend bought a GTA Car kit, the pure bluetooth one, for his 2005 sport 4runner. He's got the in dash jbl 6 disk changer head unit.

I helped him install this and corresponding mic according to their youtube video (which was missing steps for removing several bolts, even though the old video shows these) and while the bluetooth seems to work perfectly for playing music, we can't change songs from the stereo or wheel controls when connected to his phone through the bluetooth. The controls work for all other input sources. Also, while calls to his phone come in over the stereo, the call can't be answered or ended through the stereo controls and one side of the call can't hear the other person talking. I haven't tested a bunch ,but i think it switches in terms of which side of the call's audio can't be heard.

Anybody else have problems with their install or experience these problems?

btw, when connecting the unit to the back of the hu, you have to unplug and leave unplugged the middle 'plug' (not sure what to call it) of the 3 connectors, which was black. They say you don't need to plug it back in, and i'm guessing it's because it is some kind of pre-wiring connection for if you want to add sat radio or something. Can somebody confirm?

We wired the mic to the a frame on the driver's door, and the aux cable to the glove box, since we have room because we're not using it to store gloves!
