gx 460 compared to 2010 4runner

so i finally decided after hanging out here for months not to get the 4runner!

here are some things i found much different between the 2.
Engine
4runner engine definitely much noiser and doesnt sound as smooth. the V8 is very quiet and has a little more punch.

Suspension.
Think the KDSS handles a little better than the Xreas. I had it on sport mode however. Also the height is adjustable via the hydraulics. Awesome!

Looks.
Must admit the 4runner still wins overall hands down. The look of the gx has grown on me and i like it.

Interior.
Wow! GX definitely beats the 4runner. Much more quieter for sure. Doors dont sound tinny. Dashboard is freaking amazing. Blue lcd and tach speedmeter much easier to see i think. Why the 3 circles on the dash to divide the separate gauges is beyond me. Cargo space in back slightly less though with motorized 3rd row.

And of course it has an integrated antenna, led tails, hid lights, running board, better location for window switches, and much much more. Hitch not included however, no biggie.

Overall in process of working out a deal to get a premium gx 460 in white. Will be canceling my order for the 2010 4runner limited with 3rd row and getting my deposit back.

THE biggest thing that made me change my mind was the incessant wait from toyota on this order and constant shifting of answers from dealer.

I dissed the gx in anger earlier, but actually its quite an amazing suv. The qx is too huge and probably wont hold value as good as the lexus.

Overall, the money factor hurts, but in the end, i would of spent that much on the 4runner and lots of time sucked out. In the end, was worth it I think to dish out another close to 20K for this marvelous GX 460! I will be back once i get it here to post pics!

That's awesome!:trophy: Congrats.

-Will you follow Lexwoody and others with suspension mods and some real off-roading? If so how does that hydraulic up & down fit in to the equation? Can you leave it off if you're just going to throw it away in 6 months?
- I'd do the white too:D
- So jealous...:D

i will not be modding this gx460 as it already comes fully loaded with kdss and the suspension which is adjustable to sport comfort and it can be raised and lower via hydraulic. The premium gx 460 needs very little modding if any. probably could use bigger rims and tires at most. i will not be offroading in this beast...

Gotcha. How much do they lift in low-range?

Wow, the new GX460 can lift?! I have not seen the new GX. In the past, GX470 can only lift the rear end, but not the front end...only the LX470 could lift all 4 corners.

the new gx 460 premium can lower and raise the rear end via the air suspension air springs. it has a 3 position height control. after further looking into this, i may just opt for a loaded base version. I do not want the hassle of dealing with leaking air when it ages and dealing with suspension issues. Also, i am in same boat again if i go with the premium, not a lot out there and another 3 month wait for special order.

When did they start selling the GX 460 again? I didn't know Toyota had resumed sales after the roll-over issue highlighted from Consumer Report's 'Don't Buy' label.

I checked out the GX at the Detroit autoshow and must admit I was very impressed, I think I prefered it's interior layout more than the 4Runner, but on the outside it looks like a Highlander to me.

it started selling again in mid april or somewhere round there.

contrary to the 4runner fans here who speculated why it spun out in the back, its weight distrubution is actually pretty good, 52%Front/48% rear. Not bad so the v8 really didnt have anything to do with why it spun out imho. tons of threads on that issue

Toyota had the new software on April 29, 2010.

So, the rear air suspension is really for cargo carrying...much less for off-roading...since it does not increase the approach angle nor the ground clearance.

Actually, the potential suspension issue is NOT with the rear air bags, but with the hydraulic shocks. If the shocks are similar to the LX's, then these shocks have a life expectancy of around 50-80k miles before they crap out. (The LX shocks have the added burden of lifting the vehicle also...so, the GX shocks may last a bit longer.) With the rear air bags, these have been on the 4th gen 4runners for a while now with no issues that i have read about them.

thai

the gx has all the fancy options available as the lx except for 4 wheel air suspension...

in any case, as is true with the gx pricing over 4runner, i am sure the lx is much more capable than the gx...whether its superior in 'every" way i doubt that...gas mileage sucks, insurance will be 50% higher, some other minor issues...

gx recall was software issue, the weight distribution is almost 50:50 front rear, so no way that skid out was related to weight issues all being in front...
i am hoping the gx will be damn near perfect! but lexus stands behind their name especially now with all those recalls...will post pics up here when i get...

It's a bit different. The LX/TLC is a step above the GX/4runner in design, not just features. It is on a whole different platform. GX is better than 4runner in terms of features, esp. luxury features (leather, sound deadening, stereo, etc.). However, i would not call the GX better than 4runner in off-road capability for instance. The 4runner Trail is a step above the GX and 4runner Limited in that regard. The LX/TLC, on the other hand, is a better vehicle in DESIGN, not just features. The underbody, suspension, frame, etc. are superior to the GX/4runner.

As for the recall, yeah, i understand it was a software problem. Weight distribution is nice, but this matters more for sports car. The GX has a tall center of gravity, solid axle, etc. So, there is more going against the GX (and any other tall SUVs) in handling than just weight distribution. I have no idea who thought that the skid was purely due to weight out front.

if i lived near the rockies and west coast, i would get the lx for sure...

i dont plan on doing much offroading but want the strength of body on frame and v8 and luxury. thats where the gx fits for me. Woulda bot the 4runner but driving the two on road is like night and day to me not to mention all the time i would waste modding it to fit my likings...gx has everything i wanted...styling could be better but it has grown on me...cant wait to get it...

All I have to say is congrats. Looks like a nice whip and Lexus has always had a standard of luxury much higher than Toyota. I wouldnt take that thing off-roading either (it would be a sin to ruin such a beautiful automobile). Anyway, that is my 2 cents on this. Conrats again and most importantly ENJOY!

I have a 4Runner with a V8, all the power options I'd want, and it is silent on the road unless you mash the gas. Then it hauls butt. I must have gotten lucky and gotten one of the OLD ones. Muahahaha.

Same vehicle I had before I switched to the GX470 (not 460). The 4Runner was very nice, but not even close to the GX line. I do realize they are not comparable SUVs though. I love them both still. And I do think the 4Runner is faster BUT, I get better MPG in the Lexus. No idea why really. Maybe I drive more like a granny now.

The difference between the two vehicles is the person driving them and the needs or wants they have. Either is a very good choice. (unless you are over 6'2, then the interior of the 4Runner gets small quick.

after owning this hunk of metal for about a 1year, i must retract a few statements.

the gx has grown on me and looks much better than 4runner except maybe from the side, in which gx looks a little like the HL, but overall love its looks!

as for the rest, well, it has its own set of issues that are surfacing and yes the quality of toyota/lexus has gone way down imho...

What troubles have you had?? It is rather sad to hear that Lexus has gone down in quality...i was hoping that they will be the exception! I think that the whole damn industry is going for bling at the expense of quality. I hear that Mercedes is trying to go against this quality trend...but, it will be a few years before we can see the result of it.
