gx 460 compared to 2010 4runner

after owning this hunk of metal for about a 1year, i must retract a few statements.

the gx has grown on me and looks much better than 4runner except maybe from the side, in which gx looks a little like the HL, but overall love its looks!

as for the rest, well, it has its own set of issues that are surfacing and yes the quality of toyota/lexus has gone way down imho...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but to say Toyota/Lexus quality has gone way down is ridiculous! There are a few people experiencing the normal minor problems. The "FACT" is the GX was just rated the BEST quality mid-sized luxury SUV (among several other Lexus'), and that rating includes crossovers too.

My personal opinion is based on my personal experiences of owning Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the past 25 years. Their quality is as good or better then they have EVER been!

obviously you need to get your gx closely looked at...or read the gx forums carefully...wheres that speed sensitive steering on the gx you claim it has?

Hmmm, seems like you are in love with JD Powers recent survey...i swear that you once trashed that survey that you love now...how times have changed....

Again, my opinion is based on my personal experiences of owning Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the past 25 years. In this time frame I have not had to lay out ONE penny to replace a failed part. Not once have any of these vehicles left me broke down on the road. EVERY other brand vehicle I've owned before has, some were major failures.

I don't think that INITIAL quality (Several months of ownership) ratings mean much; it is the long term that verifies quality/dependability/durability. Apparently JD Powers' short term ratings correlate with my personal (long-term) experiences (as far as Toyota/Lexus).

What I do not understand is; you seem to be an intelligent person but have trouble recognizing Toyota/Lexus as being the best quality vehicles made. Tell us about your personal experiences that make you feel this way. Has the Prius/Corolla been that bad for you?

Was this your opinion? If so, then why call it "FACT"??

But, on the clublexus forum, you gushed about this very JD Powers survey...yet, in the past, when the survey does not fit your opinion, you bash it to no end!! :toilet3:

As for my personal experience, Toyota/Lexus is very good. Are they perfect? No. Unlike you, i am not a fanboy to everything i own. Prius has been good, but there are a few rattles here and there...even the radar cruise has been problematic on rare occasions (never found the reason). My Sienna's back door just went out...but it is at 50k miles...thank goodness for ext. warranty. Corolla was OK, but fit and finish was poor...the new one is even worst!

Now, as for my other cars. BMW had occasional electrical gremlins, as typical. My G500 was good except for those darn window regulators. An engine mount did crack (from off-roading?), but i had ext. warranty. My wife's TSX has been very very trouble free! In fact, Acura may be in my future since Acura service near us is fabulous & economical (rare combo!!). In addition, for my paranoia, Acura's "near luxury" status is great since it is not high on carjackers' list! :D But, like anything, Acura's performance is only average, but that is OK with me at this point (no midlife crisis yet).

As noted above (and you seemed to have missed it), i was expecting Toyota/Lexus to be the exception rather than the rule in terms of car industry quality going down. Please re-read my post.

i agree the gx is not perfect and there will never likely be any perfect car...

my gripes against the gx
uneven air suspension issues in back
random acts of vibration on highway
rust all over the rear axle, yes yes the 4runners have it i know...but lexus needs to fix this...

ive test driven about 10 gx's, all had subtle vibrations in the steerin wheel, so its not so isolated as people think...

when 1st got the gx, the suv was drifting to right with steering to left! LOL, dont you think lexus should of checked that before it was shipped... that was fixed...

Koz you are too much in love with your gx, it is far from being all that

i still like the gx, but i am open to criticism just like the 4runners owners here should be...

Lets see; you experienced some surface rust under your vehicle (mostly unprotected components) and when you were told this normal you were looking to take legal action. You seem to be like some of the other whiners. You know the ones that have problems with the brake pedal making a swishing noise when pressed. Or the few complaining about windshields getting cracked, downshifting on up-grades or is it the paint chip on the front of the unprotected front end? Maybe it’s the real gripes (that are common to all brands) like warped rotors or wheel/tire vibrations. No brand of vehicle is without issues but you have to be reasonable about it. From what I can see Lexus has been better then any other manufacture as far as buying back or replacing new vehicle of the big complainers (some legit). Do yourself a favor and get rid of this poorly made vehicle and get a real quality vehicle like BMW or Mercedes. You will never be happy with a Lexus!

Please explain why this is written in the GX's Product Sheet!

Steering - Type Engine speed sensing power-assisted rack and pinion

I guess it was put in there to deliberately try and confuse you, and it did!

So, which brand has/is making the most reliable vehicles (overall). I know this will be a hard one for you!

forget the spec sheet. can you explain why the steerin wheel is still loose at highway speed? it feels absolutely the same at all speeds...

the rust is actually being investigated by lexus fyi.

the other complaints are from others...

its good to be a gx cheerleader by the way...mr toyoda appreciates that

I can only base my opinion on my experience with the GX. I have driven several 460s (3 or 4) plus mine and I have never experienced any vibration. I've had the rear air on my 05 4Runner and now my GX and never had an issue with unevenness. From what I understand this has occurred on several rear air Toyota/Lexus vehicles through the years and only required sensor adjustments or a replacement. I would not even consider a tow vehicle without it. It is worth its weight in gold!

Criticism is one thing but saying Toyota/Lexus quality has gone WAY down is (again) ridiculous!

Same question to you; which brand has/is making the most reliable vehicles (overall)?

See this is what I'm talking about ("forget the spec sheet"). Even when it is proved in writing you only see what you want to see (negative). The FACT is the steering has the same low drag feeling at all speeds (but nowhere near loose). If you could see beyond your negative mind-set, this is the way Toyota designed their speed sensing system. I’ve come to like it better then the wheel being harder to turn at higher speeds.

Well, as noted above, i thought that it was Lexus/Toyota. Do we have a problem reading?

But, just because Toyota is good, we can't criticize it and not have fanboys like yourself from having a fit?? It is good to be open-minded, Koz.

Your experience? Yeah, that 25 years of toyota ownership does not really mean much when it comes to talking about other brands and critiquing one's brand. Why? Because it already shows your bias.

T4Fun...Most SUVs leaned to one way or the other from what i have seen...nothing new with GX460. GX470 had it. My G500 had it. My brother's LX had it. And my G500 did not have air suspension.

BTW, you never answered...why are you so enamored with JD Powers Initial survey NOW?? You used to hate it with a passion! Bias??????? Gotcha! :)

No, my real issues was/is with CR and rag mags! The only problem with JD Powers is they are rating initial ownership!

It is SO hard for you to say Toyota is the best. Again criticizing is one thing (believe it or not I have also criticized Toy/Lex) but saying their quality has gone WAY down needs to be challenged.

I hate to break this to you but EVERYONE is bias. There is nothing wrong with this if you have just cause. During those 25 years I have had to work on friends and family’s vehicle and help them with their problems. I don’t see any difference in the quality of domestic or European vehicles during this time (except maybe Audi and Hyundai).

Yeah, ok...i won't post your past comments about this! BTW, on clublexus, which JD Powers survey did you post and was so happy about???? Was it the dependability survey?? I could swear that you started a thread all about this JD Powers initial survey and how happy you were. I am happy that you feel differently about JD powers initial survey THIS year...coincidentally, the year that your GX was ranked 1st. Weird, isn't it?

Koz, just giving you a hard time. :)
