GX460 buying questions

We have a 2013 gx460. The wife loves it. She drives 65mile round trip everyday and is averaging right at 19-20mpg on 87 non ethanol fuel. When she has to get ethanol she puts mid grade in it. My sisters 2011 4Runner barely gets 16mpg so I am very happy with the fuel consumption especially having so much more power. Oil changes are easy IMO and I go 7500 between changes with the Toyota synthetic 0w-20. 98k on the clock right now.

This is great to hear and making me lean more and more towards a GX. I do find it amusing when people quote mileage for 4runner being better stock. . .while this is true the minute you put lift/oversized tires/rack/etc the v6 I feel struggles a bit more and so does your mileage. The GX v8 barely notices the add ons from my research.

I'm between a 11-13' GX460 and say 14'+ used 4R. The GXs can be had for a little less and have more detailed interior, sound deadening, etc.

More power but more weight.

4R > GX in aftermarket, but there's more coming online; Mostly for pre 14's prior to the predator mouth front end. Mud and GXOR FB group are good sources

I have no need for a 3rd row seats, and the folding issue a GX has not going totally flat vs a 4Runner isn't the best, but I'd survive.

Just planning to do some mild wheeling and overlanding in time, but I'm too big to sleep in either in back, so to the roof or external tent it is regardless at 6'2.

It'll be my daily driver, so I'm not sure whether or not I should split hairs on MPG with either since it's marginal sort of, not sure there's one killing the other in that department! Thoughts from existing 4R owners please chime in.

I've had 2 FJs, and come from a Toyota 4Runner family. My dad had 2, both my aunts, and when I get into one I feel "at home" to be honest.

I have an 07 Limited 4WD... have been eyeballing a GX460 for over a year now... haven't decided yet which route I will take and I'm in no hurry. My brother in law picked up a 17 TEP 4runner and its nice. When I drove it, it didn't feel much different than driving mine. I am getting older, so I appreciate the comforts and amenities... this will be my daily driver so MPG is a concern... like many of you, I do light off-roading and do plan on modifying the GX slightly, if I bought one. I am still not sure how I feel about the barn door.

i would struggle with buying a lexus. i know lexus owners that have tremendous upkeep bills. May be different with this model.

This is exactly why I prefer leather,and I love the chestnut MB tex in our ml350 even more than leather.

The GX is a much bigger car than the 4 runner. Even though it heavier, its also a lot more powerful. I know it doesn't seem like it. This generation of 4 runner is a great sized vehicle. But if you want or need more comfort for adults in the back seat, the gX is it hands down. I think the 4 runner is aimed more at young, and the gX is aimed at older people. Just my thinking. My niece has a tRD pro. they looked at the GX and bought the 4 runner. We looked at the 4 runner and bough the GX. WE are older, no kids anymore and want the comfort. We are willing to pay the extra,not only the purchase cosat, but the operating cost as well for a bit more comfort.

you are correct. the 5th gen 4Runner and 460 are super close in size and use a lot of the same underneath parts. i was a little disappointed finding that out, especially in the cargo area. it feels roomier inside for sure. its the way the seats set in there, and with the rear door swinging out instead of up it def feels roomier and easier to load. but the measurements are basically the same.

You are right about it being the same car. However several more inches of head room, several more inches of rear set room, at the expense of cargo space. So more creature comfort in the back seat. The GX is just much nicer to live in for adults than the 4 Runner. If we still had kids at home, maybe the 4 runner would be better. But want to take another adult couple out for dinner in one car, the gX is hands down better for that. I can ride in the back seat of the 4 runner, its not bad, I can ride in the back seat of the GX and its pretty nice. My hair (what left of it) touches the ceiling on the 4 Runner, and getting in and out of the runner, I need to watch my head. The gX has several more inches there. The GX has the added benefit of another gear in the tranny and V-8 power. It's certainly no torque monster, but WAY better than the 4.0 ltr. Not much gas mileage sacrifice either. Over all, the gX is much better on a road trip, especially for more than 2 adults. About the same as a Limited 4 runner on the trail. visibility out of it is a little poorer in the gX, and more plastic at risk. The GX gas tank skid plate only covers 1/2 of the tank.
So want a truck based tuxedo, buy the GX, want a cheaper version for kids etc, buy the 4 Runner. Yes the LX/Land cruiser is much bigger, but surprisingly the size isn't used as efficiently. So not a lot of additional utility. I would have prefer the Land Cruiser, but wife's daily driver, and she won out. The Land cruiser retains its value a lot better,so does the 4 Runner.

[MENTION=89794]BackOff[/MENTION] i drove the Lexus home and had it a couple of days. then drove back to dealership to get my old car so i could remove the gobi rack and personal stuff. the ride quality is night and day. my 4Runner with the OME lift and 33's felt every little bump. the GX just glides over everything. super smooth braking. even with the factory HT tires it plowed through snowy roads at freeway speeds. for me coming from the V6 to the V8 is wonderful. time will tell on the gas difference, but the power and ride quality might be worth it

future mods will be possibly a lift but for sure better tires. i am trying to get a hold of someone at gobi too for a rack. the only racks i can find are rhino. plus normal stuff like the windows and finish up the clear bra. right now only the hood and mirrors are done, i want to get the bumper wrapped.

sorry for bringing up an old thread. i have a 2006 4Runner V6 4WD sport and my sister has a 2013 GX460 premium. The 4runner is great and goes off road great. But......The GX460 is a better car by car in my opinion. More low end torque. Much better interior. Has pretty much the same off road capability. Looks decent.

I used my the GX460 for a 2500 mile trip round the Grand Canyon, Zion park, Bryce park, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, etc. We averaged 20mpg going 80mph. Never got tired sitting inside of it. It handled the small trails that we threw at it. Interior didn't have any squeaks or rattles (car had 55k)

The only complains i have about that car is that the rear door/hatch was a little annoying, opening sideways. Filling up 91. And we slept in the back a couple nights and it wasn't flat. where the rear seats folded, there was a hump that hurt our hips (4runner doesn't have this issue). And the car came from Maine so it has surface rust on the frame even though its a 5 year old car with 56k miles on it.

But we loved the GX460. It was super smooth, quiet, fuel efficient, and just ate up the miles. Cant wait till my sister sells it to me.

I prefer the swing out door. I feel like I can get in the cargo area easier. especially in my garage. even if my garage door is closed I can at least prop it open a little bit to load. with the traditional pop up I was not able to do that. plus I have a drop down table on the tailgate for road side snacking. the only issue I have, is dust seems to get in there a lot easier. and around the window area when you open it. I do miss being able to roll down the back window though.
I did a 800 mile trip through Wyoming and South Dakota couple weekends back, we avg'd 16mpg for trip. it was 4 people loaded down and lots of hills and insane wind in Wyoming. we got blown around a little but otherwise it handled great. kids loved the roominess in the back seats and being able to recline. I installed some extra USB ports back there for them so they can charge all of their tablets and phones.
I miss my 4Runner for a few things but overall I am glad I moved to the GX

Are the GX460-470 prone to the frame rust like the 4runner? Will they get as many miles?

I doubt anybody knows yet. But I would think yes. Metal rusts. So why would it not rust in the rust belt like everything else. I would certainly do my due diligence buying a used GX, or for that matter any metal vehicle from the rust belt or salty environment.
