I was at the dealer buying a used 4th Gen and I took a few minutes to look at the 5th Generation. A few things....
1- It does look quite a bit wider, more squared off, and just BIGGER than the old one.
2- The Trail Edition looks way cooler to me in person than it did in pics (and I thought it looked awesome in pictures).
3- The SR5 was still nice, but it looked pretty bare bones compared to the Trail.
4- Something has been nagging at me since the first time and I couldn't put my finger on it. This vehicle just looks SO familiar and I couldn't figure out why. Then for who knows why it just hit me today. The 5th Gen (especially Trail) just looks like an FJ60 mixed with hints of an old late 60's Ford Bronco to me in a lot of ways, and to me anyway I think it looks EXACTLY like what the FJ60 would have evolved into if they had stayed on that path and not gone hogwild with the LC and turned it into something totally different. This seems to be getting back on track with the true heritage of the 4Runner line and where it all sort of sprouted from (or converged to after the 4Runner became intermingled with the Prado back a ways).
I think Toyota has done a good job of coming back to their roots with this one in a lot of ways. Now if we can only get that FJ with a removable top and call it the FJ 4.0 or Landrunner or FJ Landcruiser or just something besides FJ "Cruiser".
