Hail damage - insurance totaling

We had a hail storm here in June...I finally washed my 4runner yesterday and realized I had a bit of damage. The adjuster was very thorough...found enough dings (over 100 in the hood alone, although i can't see nearly that many) to justify totaling the truck out. Naturally I will buy it back, the dents are not that noticeable, and the insurance check will probably cover the new paint job I have been wanting since the clear coat started to fade.

What I am wondering, as I wait to hear back from them with an offer, is what is my truck worth right now?

1997 SR5
206k miles
4x4 manual with e-locker
No rust, body and frame in good shape
Toytec 3" spacer lift front, OME 890 coils rear with Firestone air lift bags
new clutch, timing belt, current on all maintenance
excellent condition 265/75/26 Goodyear Silent Armor tires, new wheel paint
Stubbs HD-SKO rock sliders
fully sound dampened interior complete with foam and mastic, sealed doors for better midbass response, high end speakers all around, 5 channel amp, pioneer dvd navigation head unit
Wired with CB on a drifter mount
Yakima Loadwarrior with custom low profile mount
Tinted windows
Sunroof
Clean interior, Wet Okole seat cusions complete with custom hardwired seat heaters switched in center console

Last week my ac compressor froze up, so i ordered a new compressor and all the parts that go along with a proper ac job. Having just worked a bunch of overtime, I also finally ordered the Toytec Ultimate lift with Superflex rear coils I have been eying forever. Also ordered ITRE's and a spare cv axle with my upcoming Colorado trip in mind. With $2000 in parts already on the way and many hours into the sound deadening project, this truck is staying with me.

I'm seeking input on what a reasonable offer from Allstate would be for this truck's total value. They will subtract about 30%, give me a check for the rest, and let me keep the truck.

My guess is they'll pay you out around $3,000. The after market parts most likely wont factor in. But your plan of keeping it and fixing it is a good one.

they totaled it for that!!
that is crazy to me
I dont know how it works in your state but in idaho you would know have a branded title since its been totaled if you ever sell the truck that will effect things.... at least in idaho
it just seems crazy to me
I mean if you can make money on the deal then I suppose it is win win.... but still

wow i'm also surprised they totaled it!!! my brother was in dallas 2-3 years ago when those tornados hit and the hood and cab of his truck (white 2005 silverado 2500hd) literally look like a golf ball after getting pounded by fist sized hail. insurance covered body and paint and a windshield and all was good. something just doesn't seem right.

Why file a claim? Couldn't you just not file the claim and fix yourself to keep your title in tact?

I'm pretty sure a check for $3000 is worth a branded title, on a 15 year old truck with 200k on it already, how much can it really change the value? I can't imagine not taking the check

Toyotas have a higher resale value than chevys with hail damage is how the adjuster explained it to me, so the insurance company expects to make out better totaling and then reselling the truck. I could have taken $2600 without totaling it, but decided to roll the dice and hold out for the max pmt. I am hoping they see fit to pay out about 3600 doing it this way

You'd definitely come out ahead with this. I wouldn't worry about the branded title either. Just keep the paper work, and if you ever decide to sell it, just show the person it was totaled for hail damage. I would have no problems buying a nice truck that has a rebuilt title if hail damage was the reason.

In Indiana it has to pass a 10 minute inspection when getting the new title, not sure about Texas. I've bought and sold a couple rebuilt cars and never had any problems.

Makes sense for you I guess if you are certain you can buy it back.

There must be some benefit to the insurance company though. They pay you $2600 to get fixed, or they total and pay you $3600 less 30%, which equals $2,520 to you. What is their advantage to totaling the truck if their payout is roughly the same? Can you still insure it with them after its totaled? Maybe I'm missing something.

Happened to mine. Bought it off the previous owner (family friend) that had it totalled out.. He was driving home on a 35 mph stretch in the fog and the wheel came off the shoulder so he panicked and mashed the brakes... He even still has the pictures. He loves 4Runner so much he just bought a brand new one.

Slid into the ditch and needed very minor work. Running board, fender flare, and some paint work... They ended up totalling it out as it says on the car fax. Vehicle went into ditch minor accident..

My '97 was in similar shape/upgrades and if I recall they gave me $6800 I think. Very fair. It was Progressive. It was $700 to buy the truck back.

I bought my 02 after the 2nd owner had serious hail damage. got a great deal on a truck that had less than 100k on it at the time. never regretted the purchase. Now that it has new rubber, next step to putting it back together is fixing the damage and putting a new hood on.

The insurance adjuster just called me with the final numbers. Final payout after $50 deductible of $3040. They consider this $100 shy of totaling the vehicle, so no salvage title. I would consider this the best possible outcome, so I am very happy today!

That is awesome! Looks like you got $2000 worth of free parts and then some...

Yeah, that's way better than totaling it. Are they raising your rates because you made a claim? Be sure to calculate that cost in to see how far ahead you actually end up.

This claim won't affect my rates at all, only driving related at fault claims do.

We had our 2003 audi inspected today, it had far less damage due to thicker metal. I only saw 2 dings, but once again the adjuster was meticulous. Pay out for the audi will be $1070. We probably won't even fix those, they are so hard to see.

Just an FYI, If you collect a claim for hail damage and don't fix it, they might not cover if you get another hail claim. Learned that the hard way
