HAM radio install pics?

Mid Console: Kenwood Stereo, Uniden BCD-536HP
Lower Console: Kenwood TS-480

I'm also about to install some invasive, permanent antenna mounts. I'll try to document that process.

Yaesu FT-8800 Installation

I have a Yaesu FT-8800 dual band mobile mounted in my 2008 4th Gen. I installed the remote control head in place of the sunglasses holder in the overhead console, near the sunroof control.

This is neat and out of the way and most people who ride with me don't even notice it's there. This is also nice for theft deterrence. I have routed the remote connections for the microphone and control head down the passenger A-pillar (use caution to avoid interference with airbag). The microphone connection point is remoted next to the driver seat with a mic clip on the center console. I have an external Motorola speaker mounted under the drivers seat for loud clear receive audio.

I'd eventually like to mount the radio chassis in the unused subwoofer compartment like Dawg4Runner has done.

[MENTION=127820]LOBO79[/MENTION] I made it out of a 1" x 1/8" piece of steel stock. Bent the angles in a vise, drilled out the holes and sprayed it with wrinkle finish black paint. I routed the speaker cable down the headrest post hole and under the seat cover.

It is not a ham mount, but i have modified my mount between a Gamber Johnson and a Ram mount.


Plus it is removable with by just loosening a screw and the whole unit comes out. This is an older pic, i will put a newer pic on later today.

Nice thing about this radio is that the faceplate is magnetic, so just pull it off and unplug it then you can take the faceplate with you when parking in sketchy areas!

Hey [MENTION=97261]CHawks_12[/MENTION], I have had it installed for about 6 years with no trouble or movement. I think it all depends on the radio control head size and how securely you mount it. I used the Yaesu YSK-8900 control head separation kit for my installation (if you are using a Yaesu mobile radio, there are several much cheaper separation kit versions on eBay). Be careful to double check pinouts you extend or create your own cables.

I don't have a writeup but I'll see if I can find some photos from the installation. Basically, you remove the overhead console and the sunglasses holder can pop out (careful with the open/close mechanism). There is a black plastic housing around where the sunglasses holder was installed and I drilled some small holes in this to bolt in the radio control head. There are 3/4"-ish holes on the right and left side where the pivot mechanism was attached, and I reused these to route the cables to the control head; the Yaesu has control data connection on one side and mic on the other. Even if I decide to remove the radio and reinstall the sunglasses holder, the modifications wouldn't be visible as they'd be covered by the sunglasses holder.

Slowly outfitting my new (to me) 2004, I'm trying to figure out the optimal location for a 2m or 2m/440 mobile unit. I have the OEM generic double DIN radio and wouldn't mind replacing it as well.

My question is whether folks have had good luck replacing the OEM radio with a single DIN unit and just stacking a mobile transceiver in the remaining space. this would certainly fit physically and be a clean install, but I'm wondering about heating/ventilation issues. Is it reasonable to just shove a 50 (or possibly 75) W transceiver into that relatively restricted space or will I be asking for overheat problems?

Finally got around to installing a 2m mobile unit. I pulled the stock double DIN radio and found that the side brackets mounting the radio to the dash are also a direct fit for a single DIN radio and a 2m rig below. Since the 2m rig is about 3/4" narrower, all I needed was a 3/4" spacer plate to mount it all up using stock hardware:

You'll note I used some homebrew sheet metal to fill the gaps upfront. Not perfect looking but close enough. Total cost of everything - under $200 (Yaesu FTM-3100 $115 (HRO sale), JVC KD-R870BT $60 (Labor Day sale at Fry's) + $10-15 for Metra plug kit, some crimp connectors and miscellaneous mounting screws).

I posted these pics in another thread a while back.

My current setup is a Yaesu FTM-350AR. The head unit is mounted in the cup holder slot. It can be removed in less then 10 seconds if I'm parked in a location where I'm concerned about theft.

The mic is wired under the console up to where the ashtray used to be.

The speaker is a Yaesu MLS-200 dual speaker, mounted under the headrest.

The radio chassis is mounted in the rear storage compartment next to the aux battery power buss.

The antenna mount is a Diamond K400CNMO hatchback mount.

I use a 16" Comet SBB1NMO "rubber duckie" for everyday use. Makes it easier to get in and out of the garage.

When I hit the trails I use a Comet SBB5NMO antenna.

The sales guy at HRO sold me the same mount yesterday after noticing I don't have clear room space due to my full-length rack. How did you run the cable from the mount into the cabin?

[MENTION=140870]Offcamber[/MENTION] I ran the antenna cable down along the tail gate weather stripping then behind the tail lamp assembly. The wire loom next to it is for the 40" Rigid light bar on the roof rack.

The antenna cable is the one that is under the tail lamp assembly(the cable making a U-turn back up into the assembly). There was a hole behind the tail lamp assembly that I was able to put the cable through. Once I got it into the cabin then I ran it behind the rear cargo panel then under the door threshold and to the front console.
