Ham radio mount

Originally, I thought that I am going to go with a Yaesu FT-8800R for its X-band repeat feature. It is going to be $369.

These past couple of days I found out that FTM-400DR *also* do X-band repeat, and that it has built in GPS+APRS so that it can automatically report your location onto Google Maps APRS , I think I am SOLD to the idea of FTM-400DR instead. Gigaparts have it for $499 (after mailin rebates etc).

I am planning to use Diamond K9000 Motorized Antenna mount and Diamond 38" NR770HBNMO Antenna mounted on my Gobi Roof Rack.

I think FTM-400DR also have a touch screen that you can send out APRS messages!

Just got done installing mine, and the 2 reasons you mention are exactly why I bought the FTM-400DR. Now, if I can figure our how to work the thing, more complicated than a smart phone.

Any one of you putting the FTM-400DR unit under the passenger seat? Is there any "fan noise" issue"?

Some good points there.

Unfortunately the 5th gen is about the worst vehicle in existence to try and mount a radio in. Anywhere you mount it(if you mount it in the open) looks terribly out of place, and you can't mount it anywhere without either drilling holes in to something you don't want to drill holes in to, or removing space from somewhere you desperately need it. This is one of the factors behind the remote display being mounting above dash. I really don't like the thought of it, but at least it's out of the way and only blocks my view of the hood.

I don't know.....I mounted my ICOM in my Unlimited and I am pretty pleased with the outcome

I regularly use that space for storage and plugging in my chart plotter, so it was a non-starter for me.
Not to mention that the built in GPS sensor would have no hope of acquiring satellites if mounted in a spot like that.

I have an ICOM- IC 7100...I mounted it in the blank spot below the A/C

I'm a bit OCD and chose the Icom ID-880h because of it's small head.

The radio is under the driver's seat. I tapped the mono cable of our AUX port so the audio comes out through the 4Runner speakers when I've got AUX selected but the AUX plug is still fully operational. Let me know if you want me to ID the correct pins for you.

MIC stays in the center console and has a remote RJ45 jack in there to connect to.

Has anyone found a convenient way to mount a ham radio in their 4runner? Thanks for any ideas.

I'm mounting mine under the rear seat which has a ton of space if you remove the pretty liner and using thumbscrews. I'm using cat 6 extenders to run the cables up to the front. I can remove everything whenever and bring it inside to my desk/safety.
Also with the seat flipped up I can use it while sitting in the rear or with the seats laid down while resting in the back. I haven't decided how I want to run the sound up to the front.

Ok, so I literally knew nothing about this type of radio until I saw this thread, haha. If someone wouldn't mind dumbying down what these types of radios are used for, it would be awesome.

I will say that my interest lies in a form of "prepping" I guess. I live outside our wonderful nation's capital, so the likeliness of an attack close to home is much higher. My wife works in the opposite direction from my office and we are about 85-90 miles apart when at work, one on each side of DC of course. I am trying to find a reasonably priced way to communicate if the sh*t hits the fan and we face another 9/11 communications issue.

HAM Radio is just different frequency than CB, longer range, some frequencies have repeaters that are country or even world wide. You need a license to communicate on the air waves. Think of it like having a licence to have a radio station. And very much like radio stations have signs KNX 1070, you would as well. Great for emergency preparedness.

[MENTION=75328]DannyLlama[/MENTION] it actually fits perfectly down there with the factory equipment. I adjusted the plate to apply slight pressure and wedge it in a little but isn't affixed permanently. No issues with excessive movement so far!

Glad to see hams on this forum. I've been radio-active for over 25 years. Extra class and had to pass the 20 WPM code test back in the days. So far I've worked about 180 countries from my mobile HF station.
I just bought a new 2016 4Runner SR5. Now I need to move my radios and antennas into the new vehicle. I'll document the installation with pictures if anyone is interested.
I use an Icom 7000 with a Tarheel "screwdriver" type antenna for 80 through 10 meters HF. A dual band Kenwood Tm-v71a radio with a vertical antenna will be used for VHF/UHF bands.

Ham Radio For Dummies

For anyone considering ham radio for off road or day to day communications it can be very simple. You take simple exam that is easy to prep for and then get license. Radios don't have to be complicated, I have an ICOM 2 meter radio. With 50 watts you get great range, and when you use repeaters the range can be 50 miles plus. Voice quality is excellent, makes the old days of CB seem like the dark ages. Check it out!

I used a Ram Mount Cup Holder Base and X-Grip for my Yaesu headmount. Wanted something that would be easy to remove as I only really use the HAM when camping or out on the trails.

i used the cutout behind the cup holder, the actual radio is under the drivers seat and i have a speaker velcro'd behind the center console
