hammered drums; now axle seals keep breaking

OP take your truck here:

YotaMasters in Corona, CA
https://www.yotamasters.com/
1336 W 6th St, Corona, CA 92882
(951) 279-0220

They are < 1 hour away from you and are Toyota specialists that charge less than dealership rates.

By the way you can ask them (when they do the axle seal repair (with Toyota parts, especially the bearings Dammit) to use a micrometer and measure the axle to make sure it is within SPEC.

Don't go to just ANY Toyota place, go somewhere that is a Toyota specific shop. The Truck Shop in San Diego [http://www.sdtruckshop.com/ ] charges about $600+tax to do the rear axel seals and bearings with Toyota parts and labor. Add new rear brake shoes and labor makes it about $750. That is both sides for that price - real Toyota parts and certified Toyota technicians.

The dealerships always charge way too much.

OP is original poster, the person who owns this thread, in this case it you.

it's "it'S you" not "it you"

the nitpicking typo police are out in full force, but it's like jesus said: "before you point out the speck in someone else's eye, take the BEAM out of your own"

you are telling me to use spellcheck? look at your own writing. third grade education? please. for your information i attended the third best university on the west coast on SCOLARSHIP.

I am walking away from this thread, because you are either REALLY way out there mentally or a Troll, and either way you cannot be help.

it's not "you can not be help", it's "you can not be helped"

hippocrite. thanks for the info though!

You are a real tool, I am one of the few people that even took the time to answer any of your questions, and my reference to your spelling and grammar were related to the copy of the email you sent.

And for the record, I don't care if you own the school, your ability to type with any structure at all is of lesser quality than a high school dropout.

You're welcome for attempting to give you some sort of honest guidance in resolving your problem. As apparent by your reply, you are a master of academics and a mechanical guru.

Good luck with your totaled truck... BTW, I just went back and correct my two mistakes and revised a couple punctuation errors you missed. Why not do the same for your posts.....? Now that you have proven you can spell check and edit for grammatical errors; I conclude that you are both a tool and incredibly lazy. As a student (of any level, college or high school) you should be embarrassed if you really sent that email to PepBoys.

Its like Oprah said, "you are not fit to use a keyboard or own a car, so buy a pencil and a bike so you may live long and prosper" Ludicrous 4:20

I'm wondering, did you even look at the link I posted for you? It is an example and a description of the solution to your problem. I thought it would be the answer you were needing, however it would seem you only came here to Troll, not to get answers or take advise.

to everyone who posted, thankyou.
to toy2g, look i'm not here for a pissing contest,or to whip it out and see who's co--k is longer.
i quoted jesus and you came back with an oprah quote. seriously? OPRAH? you watch that? what's next? a ricki lake quote? you watch OPRAH, and I'M the tool?
regarding the other thread, i did glance at it, but i don't have jack stands, a jack, tools, and a driveway of my own to do work on, so i'm not going to do the work myself. last time i tried to do all the work on my tbird following the horribly incorrect haynes manual, i seriously messed up my car. i am not going to lower myself down to your level and call names like tool or whatever. who cares if you were commenting on spelling regarding teh email i ALREADY SENT? How does that help me or how is it relevant? you expect me to send them another email that was spell-checked? like they are going to read a second email when the first one is easy for any person wiht a third grade education to understand.
back to the saga, i called toyota and my service advisor told me he would check and possibly replace the breather valve for 90 bucks. but he said it was useless and pointless because it's already leaking. But i think it won't hurt so i'll do it anyway even without a warranty on the repair. notice i thanked you for your information. i am going to take a first hand look at the seals myself and see if it is just normal seepage and not profuse leaking. truth is, since there is no axle grease on the alloy wheels, it may be a tiny amount of seepage past the seal.
But the toyota advisor told me I needed to replace both seals.

A clogged breather valve can and will make your seals leak. And if that is the cause, the leak may even stop.

As far as penis size, I prefer we not talk of such things on a public forum Paul.

As far as the Oprah quote, I wrongfully assumed you would be smart enough to catch that it was mocking your highly inaccurate quote of Matthew. If it makes any difrence to you, I don't watch TV at all, let alone liberal crap like talk shows.

I hope you find peace with your truck, but at this rate I find it highly doubtful.

BTW Hamming on your drums does not cause axle seal leakage.

Wear and tear (eg 75-125K miles) of usage on your rear wheel bearings and inner seals causes the leakage.

this is accurate. i can't tell you how many times i've used a 2 1/2 lb hammer to get rusted stuck on drums off. with no damage to the axle seals

well i'll just take your criticism as constructive. next time i email someone i'll do all the little things so i seem as smart as possible like capitalizing the beginning of sentences. but even with speaking colloquially and not formally, you still got the fruit of what i had to say. and ot thank everyone for their free advice and anecdotes, i will offer anyone who messages me an article i wrote on how to buy a car. i was for two years in a row the number one salesperson at acura of south bay in torrance, CA. i was also the highest earning salesperson in california from all the surveying i did at the socal dealer symposiums and consortiums. this article touches all the bases. not useless junk either. strictly specific and practical info on stuff like where you can find out how much the factory to dealer incentives are on each car, and exactly how much is the holdback amount on each car, so you can confidently offer a dealer thousands BELOW invoice on many cars, and know they will take your offer. factory to consumer cash is published like on non-highline cars like ford or chevy. but to find out secret factory to dealer cash amounts you gotta know where to look.
i don't want to post the article online here cause it doesn't relate to the thread. it's just to show gratitude as this was my area of expertise.
thanks

All snideness aside, a Chiltons or Haynes manual is a great idea. Also a Factory Service Manual, they're on the web in PDF or you can watch EBay for a hard copy. With a Chiltons and an FSM you can fix almost anything on your truck.

Replacing a rear axle seal is a little more advanced than a basic tuneup or brake job, but not out of a beginner's reach. There's at least a couple threads here on the board that walk you through it, so I vote you grab some wrenches and get at it.

i'll take some advice and go back to the beginning if i can and put in bold in two sentences or so the main issue at the top. then it won't be necessary to read the whole thing.

seriously though, i read my post and my eyes don't hurt. so i'm not sure if i believe you.
hyperbole, huh.

But back to the subject, i want to remove my lug nuts and wheel and then make sure the drum is slipped all the way on, and then replace the wheel and lugnuts and torque them tight just to make sure the ride quality /smoothness/friction/sound isn't caused by a drum not pushed all the way on or lug nuts being loose. DOes anyone know if when i slip the drum back on, do i have to adjust some flywheel in the back of the drum to bring the drum to the right closeness to the back of the drum? there is a guy named "redonkilaus" on youtube who did a video on how to put new brake shoes on and in the video he adjusts some "flywheel" or something he calls it behind the drum towards the axle and he says that adjusts the drum to the proper closeness. he was working on a 4runner. But i don't know if my year of 4runner was a different year than his (probably was) and maybe there is no flywheel, and you just push the drums all the way in, then slam the wheel against the drum and tighten the lug nuts and the wheel keeps the drum tight against the back of the drum?

thanks for all the replies.

Thanks alot! i googled "toyota factory service manual free pdf download" and all the applicable permutations and variables of what term to search for and i couldn't find anything. You don't happen to have a link for an 01 4runner sr5 (maybe4 sport too) toyota factory service manual free pdf or download do you?

there was a version of the FSM (factory service manual) on TTORA. unfortunately toyota raised copyright hell and they had to take it down. go to autozone or advanced auto parts or whatever parts chain you have locally and look for a Chilton's or a Haynes manual for your truck. being that the tacoma is essentially the same, they lump them both into one book. hell amazon might have a copy for cheap.

The last time I checked, the files are still available for download. All TTORA took down was the page containing the links. If you can find archived pages with the hotlinks (like with the Wayback Machine) you can still DL the PDFs.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/classic-t4rs/126898-where-find-factory-service-manuals.html

Lots of public libraries have copies of that sort of thing too. They generally won't let you check them out, but you can always xerox the pages you need and take those home with you.
