Hand Winch?

Could anyone recommend a good hand winch, or come along winch for under 80 dollars? Thanks!

I'm really suprised Duhockey of all people didn't know that a HiLift can be used as a winch...

To the OP, why do you want a hand winch? What do you plan to use it for?

I ask because a hi lift may not be the right tool for the job. Its really a jack, but can be used like a winch like the above video.

If you want a hand winch for use on the ranch, or something like an ATV, or pulling something up onto a trailer, then get a true hand winch.

I have a comealong, why would I need a hilift to do that job? I dont even have a hilift to jack up my truck... Im gonna use the stock bottle jack on a hi lift platform/modified with tire tread bolted to the bottom for extra tread.
 
I need the winch to get myself unstuck off roading if the situation arises, I have used one 2-3 times to get myself out of hairy situations. Last time I was using it the spool took some damage, but I think I got it sort of fixed. I was planning to get a hi lift soon anyway to jack up the car off road, so I think I will get one to use as a come along and a jack!

why not just get an electric winch? you can get a smittybilt 8k for $300. Then just get a receiver mount for it and you can mount it front or rear. (have a machine shop put on a front receiver) A little more money, but the best bet if you plan to get stuck often.

The Hi Lift jack will run you about $80 and then you have to buy shackles and chain, probably another $80. Cost wise you are now halfway to an electric winch, which is must faster and easier!

Now then, if you don't go offroad much, or don't get stuck much :) then a hi lift and some chain will probably do!

be careful using hi lift jacks, lots of stories of damaged cars and people when they have slipped out from underneath the car, make sure to get something like Tire tread to put on the bottom to give it more traction,

also, if you have sliders get the slider adapter and its more likely to stay put,

Agreed, Hi Lifts are dangerous if used incorrectly, and really for most they are more of a "look at at me, Im a douche bag that goes offroad and has my hi lift mounted on my truck all the time".

I had one, and they are a pain to use as a winch. I sold my hi lift jack with my jeep, and yes I had it mounted on there too, so I was a douche bag too once before! But, I will not buy another, just dont see the need!

A good bottle jack will be much better for lifting, they do make them tall enough for lifted trucks by the way. And they do make hand winches in larger capacities for winching vehicles too (up to 10k I believe). Get the right tools for the job, not a universal tool! Any extra money it costs will be well spent.
 
I dunno I think I am gonna just go with a hi-lift, I got my come along winch working again, and this is a birthday present for me. I will be stowing it in the trunk, not like one of those idiots who leaves it outside to rust
 
I love my hilift. I've never needed to use it on the trail yet, but I use it on a regular basis in my driveway. Faster than any of my floor jacks.

They do need to be used carefully. They aren't stable, so jackstands (or rock, log, whatever) are a must. But they're versatile as hell, and I won't ever not carry mine.
 
I have a come along in the car, but it really isn't a good solution. It has limited range and one rated high enough is huge and heavy. A handwinch has the advantage of holding a lot more cable an is more usable.

A real winch is the best.

there are the little 20-40 dollors ones. But they only have a few feet of cable and the handle is pretty short. So you still need to attach a long strap or rope. Plus then you would need to re-rig it all up again every few feet, which is what you would need to do with the hi-lift as a winch. But something is better than nothing I guess.

Others have also already mentioned getting an inexpensive electric winch and a hitch attachment. So it's not permanent and don't require a winch bumper. I've been stuck messing around in what looked like hard packed ground. Didn't think I'd get stuck anywhere. But I did. and I needed to catch a flight the next morning, I was desperate and no winch or any of my gear. So 500$ later is what it took to get a wrecker and a crazy enough driver to get me out of mud hidden under a dirt crust in the middle of the night. 500$ would have gotten me an cheap electric winch and hitch kit. Even if the winch sucked and went up in smoke after a few uses.....but that is where my 500$ went:redbrick:.
 
The More Power Puller looks like a reliable/affordable solution, but the cable length might be too much of a limitation for solo recoveries.

What about something like the Black Rat/Beaver Tuff-Pull hand winch?

Anyone know anything about those?
