Handbrake Cable?

Replaced mine 42,000 miles ago in the 96 (4wd, 16" wheel) with a Dorman part C95320, it came with the whole mess from handle to left wheel to right wheel- except one bracket that you transfer over.

If I'd gone with Toyota it would have been 46410-35800 4-RUNNER; REAR; ALL; 4WD; W/ 16 WHEEL

It's up to you to find the right number for your particular truck, of course. Also check that your bell cranks that the cables attach to at the wheels are freely working, they often freeze up too.

Thanks [MENTION=5345]habanero[/MENTION] for the nice writeup! I'm thinking of replacing my parking brake cable soon. Toyota shows a crapload of part numbers based on 2WD/4WD, 96-99 or 98-02 year range, w/ and w/o 16" wheels or 265/70 tires. Confusing!
My 4Runner has 16" wheels but did not come from the factory with them. I don't know if the part number for larger wheel sizes is somehow improved, larger diameter?

So I looked up the Dorman Tru-Torque cables, looks like it's length differences....

My husband has the same deal on his '99 SR5 Highlander ed., the door jamb and Toyota Owner's site lists 15", but it definitely has brakes for 16", same as my always was 16" 96. Unfortunately he hasn't had to replace his cable yet so no input there other than the most logical thing in his case is to go with the 16" 4wd version.

If you're referring to the information plate inside the door, the vast majority of them state 15in wheels even when installed with 16in. Unless you did make the full conversion over?

So what is different on the brakes between the 16” and 15” with how it interfaces with the parking brake cable? Different bell cranks?
I'm redoing my brakes and just ran across this myself. I don't know of a cable difference but the drum brake cylinder is larger (2") for the 16" wheels and (1-?/16) for the 15" wheels. I can't remember the size of the smaller one sorry. I do recall hearing the difference between the two and thinking with such a small difference why bother with to different cylinders...

Wish I could tell you....but honestly I don't know why the 15" 4wd is nearly 2" longer than the 16" 4wd. You may be the one who gets to teach me. You know if I run across a 99+ 4Runner with 15" wheels at the junkyard I'll be looking!

I’m aware of the wheel cylinder differences. It’s 15/16” I think for the 15” and 1” bore for the 16” wheels.
I went ahead and got part 46410-35771 because it is for 98-02 and 15” wheels but most importantly looking at pictures on eBay it’s the only one with a PINK sticker near the end... that’s the color on mine.
Aftermarket cables aren’t so picky and simply list 96-02 for the application. I think it’s going to be fine.
