Handheld scanner

I'm looking for a portable handheld scanner for monitoring ski patrol at the mountain that I frequent. I'm practically totally new to the world of radios and scanners. Here's what I do know.

Mammoth Mountain & June Mountain Ski Areas Trunking System, Mammoth Mountain, California - Scanner Frequencies

It's an analog system that they use on the mountain.
Motorola Type I
Trunked system

Would these radios work to scan the proper channels since there are about 6 channels used?

2 meter
Vertex VX 150

Vertex VX 170

Tri-band - 2 meter, 440, 220
Kenwood TH-F6A

What does the 2m or 2meter mean? Water resistance?

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you need to monitor ski patrol? You planning to do a lot of out-of-bounds skiing?

Those radios that you posted are amateur radios (ham). You'll need a ham license to operate them. Technically those are not considered "scanners" because they have a "push to talk" button on the side which would give you the ability to talk to them if needed.

You are looking more for a scanner which just listens in to the frequency. Check out radio shack or fry's. You'll need to find a scanner that can tune into the 800mhz range in order for you to tune into the ski patrol.

Here is an example of what you need to look for. Or something along those lines.

And I do plan on doing some backcountry, but it's open boundary there. So, it's not for any illegitimate purposes.

Over the weekend, after the big dump, trying to find out and know which parts of the mountain was opening up when was very challenging. Top half of the mountain wasn't opening until later in the day, and that was only because I saw a lift running. Knowing the right info can help me get to first tracks, or at least better snow!
