Hankook Dynapro AT2

This is a brand new tire introduced in March 2019.

What caught my eye are:

1. AT tire that is apparently highway friendly.

2. 3-ply casing. (Besides BFG AT KO2, this maybe the only AT with 3 ply sidewall!). I see this on TireRack but cannot confirm this 3-ply on other sites.

3. Snowflake.

4. P-metric and LT available. Weight not too bad for P-metrics.

What is not to like?! According to Discount Tire, it is a 2nd tier tire.

Not sure where TireRack got their info, but i called local retailer and they said AT2 has 2-ply sidewall, not 3-ply.

And discount that ridiculous discount tire rating system. They’re a corporation likely receiving incentives to promote one tire over another. This crazy internet thing has all kinds of reviews and stuff to help guide you.

Maybe, but i am sure that there are some truths to it...so, yeah, it is ONE of sevaral other criteria i use to judge a tire.

Not sure where TireRack got their info, but i called local retailer and they said AT2 has 2-ply sidewall, not 3-ply.

OK, confirmed with TireRack that the sidewall is indeed 2-ply.

Never had good luck with balancing Hankooks. They've stepped up the game lately but I'd still recommend going with the name brand. Better than Falken IMO.

Better than Falken, how? Falken has been making performance track tires for many years and has a good reputation in the market. Their first foray into all terrain tires wasn’t stellar with the original Wildpeaks, but the new AT3W is highly regarded and reviewed. Jeep apparently thinks they’re good enough to start outfitting their very sought after Gladiator with them and ditched BFG for their other applications. So I’m just wondering how you believe Hankook is better than Falken.

The Hankook Dynapro ATM is also highly regarded so it may just come down to style preference but they’re both head to head with the much more expensive brands and have closed the gap between what is perceived as a budget tire and a premium tire.

I would not put OEM usage as evidence of superiority.

Toyota TRD PRO uses Nitto and Goodyear. Does that mean anything?

Ford Raptor uses BFG KO2.

My Lexus uses cheap Bridgestone Dueler HT with a treadwear rating of 300!

I will 100% agree that you generally can’t gauge a tire’s quality based on a manufacturer’s choice to offer them OEM. Look no further than the TRD-P or the new Rebels coming with notoriously weak side walled Duratracs.

All of that being said, the Gladiator has so much hype that I’d like to believe Jeep realized how much testing and off road prowess is expected of these trucks. Coupled with the countless positive reviews, I don’t think Falken is deserving of the budged tire brand name some people still label them as just because they personally aren’t super aware of the brand and legacy. Same goes for Hankook but the educated buyer will also see the reviews and make their own decision.

Although I prefer the Falken Tire, I don’t believe they’re necessarily better than Hankook. Just want to know by what measure Hankook is “better.”

OK, confirmed with Hankook themselves (615-432-0700)......AT2 of ANY size (P-metric and LT) has 2-ply sidewall. (TireRack is WRONG in its description.) There does not seem to have any additional reinforcement to the sidewall.

Silly me assumed (I know, I know) that any LT tire would have additional ply layers over a P tire.

Most (if not all) LT have additional plies in the TREAD area, not the sidewall. So, yes, LT have more plies in the tread which allows them to carry more weight.

You're NOT wrong in some cases. Some tire companies do make the sidewall plies THICKER (but still 2 plies) for LT tires. The problem is........how do you know which does that?

For example, for Michelin LTX Defender, after talking with Michelin folks, the sidewall for LT and P-metric are similar in strength. Yet, Cooper tires claims that LT tires from them have thicker sidewall (still 2 plies) than P-metric counterpart. The problem is that there is no metric for this claim. You just have to believe them at their word.
