Hankook DYNOPRO ATM vs GY ARMORTRAC (more tires... I know)

So after about two solid months of price shopping, research, and consideration of my daily driving routine and whereabouts, I decided to go with a 255/70/18. I had/have contemplated selling my 18" limited wheels and going aftermarket 17's, but scrapped that idea due to budget and the amount of time that process takes. I decided on the Hankook's the with the tire certificates, after all things considered. Discount Tire (unbelievably good customer service) had them for $146 plus discount and mail in blah blah. Ultimately, I walked/drove out with the ARMORTRACs for the same exact deal, mostly due to availability at the time and down the road, should I ever need replacements. I was absolutely fine with this purchase until today. These were purchased 10/17/14, so it's only been a week. Today I was backing through a yard, with damp grass and very, very slight incline. I had ten 2x6x8s strapped to the passenger side of the roof(which was on the higher side of the slight incline) and you'd have thought I had racing slicks for tires. I was blown away that I had so little traction, especially under light throttle and full time 4wd. Second guessing my purchase big time right now. Anyone run the ARMORTRACS and or have issues with traction?

Wet lawns on an incline are deceptively slippery. Lets face it, you don't want your tires to dig into your lawn to claw up traction do you? Wet grass can be as slippery as ice, I wouldn't give up on the tires bases soley on this incident.

Im kicking myself now, for not taking pics of the area and incline, but clawing up the lawn may have been better than the slick spots the tire spin left. I get it though. I know how slick wet grass can be, but damn near bald Bridgestone Duelers didnt do this in the same area. Just a little surprised I guess. Other than this one issue, I still like the tires so far...

I noticed the hankook dynopro ATMwas awful on wet roads. We didn't keep them that long. But others seem to love them. So your results may vary.

I had the same experience with the Hankook ATM's, HORRIBLE on wet roads. I replaced mine with only around 10,000 miles on them.

I noticed the hankook dynopro ATMwas awful on wet roads. We didn't keep them that long. But others seem to love them. So your results may vary.

In all of my searching, I did see that noise increased significantly at around 20k, along with diminished control on wet surfaces. I think both [MENTION=44866]ARK_SWAMP_RIDER[/MENTION] and [MENTION=63543]CrimsonCountry[/MENTION](sp?) both had issues and subsequently switched tires because of this.

I have the Hankook Dynapro ATM tires and find no problems whatsoever with rain and slick roads. From the road to my front porch is a good high long little hill and I've many of times jumped the road curb when raining to pull closer to the front porch to unload my goods from the store, mind you this is only when it rains. And I can tell you I have never once dug my lawn up at all. I've left tracks with the tires pushing grass over like anything of substantial weight would but no dirt, digging or anything.

Honestly these tires are great all around tires. Rain has never caused any problems and they are great.

To be honest some people - some people clearly don't know how to drive on the road let alone grass. Lol. I mean this seriously. I have a hard time believing a good decent driver who knows how to drive, handle and control his/her gas pedal, brake pedal, sterring you should have no issues. If I were to be a little less caring I could slip on wet roads, dig holes in my grass and more.

Trust me these are great tires.

You are correct. I , as well as Ark (according to his comments), noticed a significant increase in noise levels as the tires got above the 20k mark. The noise level was much louder than I would have expected given the lack of aggressive tread. I wasn't unfairly comparing the noise level to the more all-season/highway tire it replaced either but to other similar ATs with comparable wear. I've had a few ATs before then, and after (Zeon LTZ, Nitto TG and Toyo AT II), and these were by far the loudest early in their tread life.

Additionally, I did have a few instances of noticeably spin on wet surfaces. Its been a while so my memory is a little foggy on the specifics but I do remember a few "Oh $h!t" moments when I thought they should've held grip. Having said that, this isn't the only reason I switched. I ended up going to the Zeon LTZs and then Cooper STT MTs after that so obviously optimal wet weather handling wasn't a primary concern. :bounce:.

As with almost every other opinion on this or another website, feedback on tire performance is very subjective. Just be careful of the initial, "honeymoon phase" reviews people give when just getting the tire and claiming how good it is before the miles rack up (guilty of this myself on several occasions). Not that these reviews are any less real, only that they aren't indicative of the overall performance for the tire's life.

Again, I don't think these are horrible or dangerous tires, they were just far below my expectations once they got over 20K miles on them. YMMV

Perfect example, the tires seem to be working great for you and meet/are above your expectations. As I said, I don't really think they were overly dangerous, just not ideal....so I switched. Hope they give you plenty more good miles.
