I’m currently shopping to get back into a 4th gen 4Runner. I went to pick up what I thought was “the one” but when I test drove the vehicle the brakes were very hard to depress. I would not want to be in the vehicle in an emergency situation. I used to own a similar 06 v8 4x4 and don’t remember the brakes being this difficult. What could be the problem? The independent Toyota/Lexus shop I use recommended me walk away because it sounds like a “brake accumulator and would cost $2300”. I’ve never heard of this issue before, help?

Could be a seized piston on one or both the calipers. I just had my front calipers replaced because of this issue. I would have to put a lot of pressure on the pedal before it would slow down. Another symptom was that my steering wheel would shake during hard braking. After replacing the original calipers and rotors, and 2nd set of pads after 150K miles, I know now what braking is supposed to feel like.

My brake pedal was crappy for the first 1.5 years after I got the 4runner because I didn't know any better. I could press it nearly to the floor and it would stop, but not comfortably. Also had a shimmy or shake feel to the steering wheel. After numerous threads on here it was clear that my brakes had an issue. I replaced calipers/rotors/pads bled the system and now I bruise myself with the seatbelt if I brake too hard.
I have seen a few topics of the brake accumulator and that prices sounds about right. A FEW topics doesn't concern me as much as the frozen calipers topic did.
