Hard brakes please help

Today my brakes got very very hard and haven't came back. Pulled the check valve and could get air through it but was hard to suck air through it. Have had an air whooshing sound from time to time in the cab the last month or so when I apply the brakes. Think it is my booster? If so are there any different vehicles I could rob one from? My used parts places don't have many 3rd gens and most have been robbed because of that.

I have a master cylinder and booster from a 99 Tacoma sitting on my shelf. I'm not sure if they are the same, I'd have to compare it to the 4runner, if you really can't find one locally.

I replaced my booster with a junkyard 3.4 Tacoma booster last year. They're interchangeable. Don't know about the MC or other parts though.

You said you tried the air valve in the servo "booster". It should flow only in one direction... that is towards the motor. Also no air flow towards the servo booster.
Also look for any leaks in the vacuum hose.
these boosters should last for a while.

that's a sure sign the booster is bad. its leaking.

why would you want to put a used one on? its a fair bit of labor to swap it out, why take the chance on a used part?

Put that backwards. My bad. The check valve was good. Replaced the booster and all is right in the world again. Replacing the booster only took 20 mins. It was easy.

I opted for the low mileage salvage yard one for $80 as opposed to the $250+ pricetag of an aftermarket one. It's not too hard to install if you don't mess with the MC and are careful with the hard lines.

FWIW, It took me closer to 1 hour to swap mine out, but worth the gamble since the salvage yard gave me a money back guarantee, and I like the idea of a toyota part behind my brake pedal!

I looked it up after I posted. those boosters are EXPENSIVE. list was like $400!
