Hard to start / rough idle

Hey what's up everyone,

Suddenly my 94 4runner 3.0 has some issues:

- When not completely cold it will only start if I floor the gas pedal. It will crank and crank but won't turn over unless I floor it.
- After getting it started it runs just fine, no hesitation, no power loss. It does idle rough and low, however.
- At a stop, when idling there is a significant exhaust smell. I can't tell if it smells lean or like a burning catalytic converter. It's not really a fuel smell, just kind of acrid and very noticeable where before you couldn't really smell any exhaust fumes at all. I'll check the cat tonight to see if it's clogged, hopefully this is the case.

I'm not getting any CEL's, and this just randomly started happening this morning. Before then the truck ran great, still does it just idles like crap and smells funky and is hard to start.

Sounds like a clogged cat to me. Mine did the same thing till I cut the cat off.

Well I can rule out the catalytic converter. I removed it and it looked fine, car still doesn't want to start even with the cat removed. Any ideas? Thanks for the reply, fo' runnin'...

Try removing and cleaning your cold start injector... it could be clogged. Worst case, it can't hurt to clean it once in a while.

A clogged cat will rarely cause you issues at start and idle- generally they're going to give you problems at highway speeds and otherwise under loads.

I would check for vacuum leaks in air intake line first that's what this sounds like. Other than that if not vacuum leak, check fuel pressure at the rails; because it could be weak pump or clogged fuel filter.

What he says makes a lot more sense than the cold start injector. That's just fresh on my mind because I was talking to someone about his CSI giving him issues over the weekend.
