Harmonic Balancer Replacement

Finished putting in my new trans today, runs great. I did a considerable amount of work with new seals and gaskets, fuel filter, etc.

I get in my car and it drove great, but it idles like shit! I popped the hood, saw my crank pulley wobbling. Talked to a friend who's a Toyota tech, asked him if my harmonic balancer is bad or if my crank itself could be out of balance.

He told me the balancer's bad, as they do wear out over time...

So to buy a new one from Toyota - $270. I really don't want to do that, I've spent enough in the last week as it is. I googled "4runner harmonic balancer" and found Rock Auto, and from a previous thread on here, they're pretty reliable.

Do you think this $80 balancer will do the trick? Anyone familiar with the brand names, which should I use?

Are you sure that it was torqued down enough? The torque is very high, like ~220 ft lbs. Loose ones can wobble, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's damaged (unless you can see damage). If it's been wobbling too much, the woodruff key and even the crankshaft itself could be damaged, but it does take a good long while for that to happen - usually.

Not sure about the Rock Auto ones.

I agree with Brian, check the Torque and see if anything looks out of place. Also that URD link is just a pulley, it sounds like he needs a harmonic balancer, which is what the pulley bolts to.

Yeah, torques good. After a good look, it's pretty f-ed. The crank seal is leaking too so I suppose I'll do both at the same time since the radiators coming out and all that shit.

LOVELY.

anyway, ordered the Dorman one for 96 bucks.

Sorry charlee, don't need a new pulley, especially not for $300.

hey this is very expensive! My mechanic advice me to change my balancer and he said that would probably cost me $250 including the replacement fee. I planned to buy separate balancer but i guess that will be more costly.

You must have the 2.7L
Mine went in my Tacoma and my buddies one went to in the same week. Not fun doing 2 in one week.
The outer grooved part breaks free of the rubber in the middle of it. Does is squeak when you load the engine down? (Headlights on,a/c on?) You can probably take the outer grooved part and shake it with your hand back and forth about 1/8-1/4 inch.
Just make sure you don't loose the key way on the crank!!

I bought the dorman one. It was fine.
