Harsh rear suspension rebound coming off bumps

The issue at hand here is it all comes down to shock valving and type of shock. I too have the dreaded mismatched rear suspension setup. Here is the reason for some of our problems. The 5100's are valved specifically for the stock Yota spring rates along with the weight of the stock tire and wheel. We all know Toyota undersprung these rigs big time. The reason? To appeal to those who use these as mall cruisers only. In order to do this, Toyota made these vehicles soft and squishy. Now for us off road junkies, that is just not going to work. We lift our rigs. We add larger heavier tires. We throw a bunch of gear in the back, ect ect ect... I believe the new 6112 series of shock has better rebound control in the shocks, thus creating a better ride. So any of us who have lifted our rigs the right way using new heavier rate coils really need a shock built and valved to handle the weight of our rigs. As someone mentioned above, go with a King, Fox, Icon ect. That is a great idea. But only if that shock is valved correctly. You may ask, well how do I get the correct valved shock. The good news is those manufacturers mentioned above have actually tested their products with our rigs and have come up with a combination which most of us would be very happy with. However, we can call these same manufacturers and ask for specific compression and rebound valving of you are so inclined and they will deliver. So yes, Bilstein is a good shock, but not for us 25% who actually use our stuff more than most. Im in the same boat. I knew it before I purchased my package. Back then and for me, it was all about what I could afford at the time. There is light at the end of the tunnel. It comes down to money and preferences. I chose the OME 895 in the rear because I knew our rigs were far too soft in the springs. Plus i knew with my lift, larger tires, my gear and passengers that I meeded better shocks and springs. I hope this helps. Im currently trying to decide between the Fox shocks with their new DSC adjustable shocks front and rear or maybe going with the Icon shocks.

I ran with the toytec ultimate which uses 5100s in the rear for about 25K miles on my rig.

Less than a few thousand of those miles were off-road, but it was more than enough to trash the rear shocks.

I spent the longest time trying to hunt down a slight knocking sound that occurred going over certain types of bumps. Eventually discovered that it was something internal to the shock, knocking around inside, whenever the shock compressed at a certain speed.

6 months later I'm running full Fox adjustables and couldn't be happier.

Well.. maybe I'd be happier if I went long travel all around, but that's another story..

The thing to take away is if you plan to off-road with a lifted runner, big wheels/tires, and 5100's, them 5100's ain't gonna last.
