has anybody experienced the driveline "clunk" described in this article?

Yes. When I would take off from a stop, I would get a slight clunk. I crawled under the truck and shot some grease into all the zerk fittings on the drive shaft...no more clunking almost 8 months later.
what type of grease?

Also had the clunk. Very slight but noticeable. Every grease fitting took multiple pumps of grease. No more clunk. All the little bits of end play and over clearance due to no grease add up to a sloppy drive line.
I used Green Grease. Over 500 miles since grease, zero fling out, zero noise, smooth driveline.

Interesting, I've experienced the cluck on high rev shifts and taking off from a stop in other trucks and knew it was either insufficient lube or a u-joint about to go. I had no idea that it happened on the stop as well.
I've been having the clunk the last few days just after I come to a stop and it's been driving me insane! I kept thinking there was just a fairly heavy object slamming forward, even on softer stops. I climbed under the truck to make sure the spare was tucked all the way up, and have been stumped. I'll check the brakes and add some grease and see if that cures the noises I've been having. Thanks!

how critical is it to use both NLGI #2 Lithium Base Chassis Grease and NLGI #2 Molybdenum Disulfide grease for different portions of the driveshaft as that author recommends?

I usedthe same grease for both and haven't had any problems. I've read both sides of the story, use two kinds, use one kind...
I used Green Grease #2 on everything. Zero issues. No more clunk. No noises. Noticeably smoother handling. We'll see how it holds up. I don't normally buy into hype (Lucas Products) but there are good stats on Green Grease.
I used to work heavy equipment, we did away with lithium. A lot of units said to only use lithium. 5 years later and thousands of hours with petroleum grease and zero issues. I'm sure lithium has its very specialized place in the world, but most of my experience has shown me it is simply not needed.

yeah normally means you need to re-grease the Slip Yoke at the rear differential, I get it every once in a while. Problem is you have to be careful not to over grease the yoke too, also if you have shop service your vehicle check you receipt since alot list re-grease joints so obviously they skipped that (I know I forgot about it alot when I worked as a GS for a local Goodyear here).
How is it possible to over grease the slip yoke? I gave mine about 6 pumps and there are no noticeable signs of grease purging out. How will I know if it is over greased?

It wont slip as much as it's supposed to last I was told, and no real way of know how much is too much unless you're installing a new yoke, normally 6 to 8 pumps is a safe estimate if you're feeling that "thunk" at stops (or like you've been bumped into)

Ive been trying to solve for a month--this is what Ive come up with.
Worth Trying If even after you have lubed up the Drive shafts and partilarly the Slip yoke of the rear shaft. Ussually that is the culprit for this known bang.
Try: Taking out that Zerk fitting ( just on the rear slipe yoke) and go for a drive, even have someone jump on the back bumper or drive up and down off a curb or down a bumpy road.
IN this pic it is the one on the right hand side
7mm should be the size
You should notice a drastic improvement without the zerk attached:clap2:
