Has anyone compiled a CEL Code Solution list?

I did do some searching here but I was wondering if there is anything specific to 3rd Gens here or online. Something like the CEL Code, meaning, and what the solution was or was not.

I have an occasional 0770 ("Shift Solenoid") and an increasingly frequent 0120 ("Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit").

Would like to know if I should begin trying to acquire the parts mentioned of if there is a bigger systemic issue I need to address.

Anyone dealt with these here?

Thanks!

I can't help with the P0120, but the P0770 is for shift solenoid E malfunction. Shift solenoid E controls the torque converter clutch lock up. Most folks have repaired this with either shift solenoids (most people do all 3) or a torque converter. I'd say 8/10 times that someone posts their fix it is the shift solenoids. Of those people that fixed it with shift solenoids, more than half used aftermarket shift solenoids from rockauto or ebay.

Solenoids ain't as cheap as they sound.

Are you sure you have a code reader sending valid codes? I've never heard of a P0120 on a 4Runner. If it is, you don't have a Pedal position sensor (that's for 01-02) so it's most likely the Throttle Body Position Sensor. If you have a multimeter you can check the resistances again the service manual specifications. If not, it's $50 from Toyota.

Yep, my old Ancel reported as shown below and my current Ultra Gauge does the same - every couple of weeks.

I just dealt with a failing TPS, it will eventually lead to stalling and surging so best to tackle that one sooner than later. Will lead to larger issues.

Thanks - I have moved this to the top of my list (another split CV boot can wait some more). I don't have any noticeable symptoms yet, acceleration is strong and predictable. I'll get one in the next couple of days replace it and check all the wires involved. I don't have a service manual yet but it appears be located on the firewall side of the throttle body intake, right? Mine seems to be labeled Toyota on the silverish flat plate

Ah - way better than OEM $ for those. One was over $200. Dumb question: are all 3 externally accessible?

Edit - MStudt - did the sealed sway bar links go live yet?

You'll have to drop the pan to replace them. How does your transmission fluid look/smell? Many people have had this code, erased it, and it's never come back. I had it on my old transmission, but that was after my radiator went bad and caused the pink milkshake.

I proactively swapped in a new radiator recently and the trans fluid looked, smelled, and felt OK to me so I topped off the little I lost. I guess I will be getting new fluid as a result of the solenoid swaps when I get around to it. Now that I think about it, that code may not have ever returned after my last clearing of codes, so I'm not going to worry about it until it returns. Or I may be confused... The TPS looks like a breeze so I'll do that for sure.

Any new OCD links coming?

I wouldn't worry about changing the solenoids unless the code comes back.

I'm hoping to release my new sway bar links in about 5 weeks...finally. Wanted to hold off until I had a little more testing. A couple people were fortunate enough to get some samples, and testing has been great so far.

Sounds like some ambitious plans. Will be watching for sure!

In the meantime, I'm going to try to resolve my TPS issue with this new sensor....

Just be careful not to strip the bolts. They are on there pretty tight after heat cycling for 20 years.

Thanks - a couple drops of PB Blaster are already doing their magic (hopefully). Gonna give it a couple days. I couldn't really see the heads - are they screw-heads?

Edit - JIS 2 driver ordered. About time I stopped trying to use Philips on a Japanese vehicle.
