has anyone noticed this

It seems that sometime I feel a very very slight "shudder" (don't know how else to describe it) when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd. It doesn't happen all the time and it is so slight that it might just be a normal feeling under certain rates of acceleration. I am just curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks

I noticed it a few times but since it I noticed that on other vehicles too I didn't really pay attention.

The 1-2 jerking shift? If so then I've got it and it's annoying. It's more noticeable when your easy on the gas and aren't in a hurry to go places. If you floor it then it shifts quick and it seems to be barely noticeable.

It only seems to happen during the 1-2 as the others are smooth.

I'm not sure if you have another problem similar to mine, but when I lift off the gas to coast on the highway and then depress the gas again, there seems to be a thud as well.

Mine's doing it too...Transmission Shudder

This is mostly the reason I joined this forum, to see if others were experiencing the same issue. My 2010 Limited has been doing it since I bought it in JAN of 2010. Just like previous posts have said....slow speeds, shifting from 1st to 2nd and easy on the gas. Definitely noticeable, as someone else posted, when you're in a parking lot or in slow moving traffic. VERY Annoying....otherwise I love my T4R.

It is your 4Runner's adaptive transmission technology in action.

Basically, it's telling you to quit driving it to the damn mall. :jk:

Since you bought yours in EARLY 2010 you MAY fall within the range of a TSB "Tranny Fix". It may or may not help your problem. Read through the following link (12 pages). Worth a shot if you fall within the range!

Some vehicles may exhibit a harsh shift on acceleration below 20 mph during the 2-1 downshift on vehicles equipped with an A750 transmission. The Engine Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration has been revised. Use the following repair procedure to address this condition.
This TSB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below:
2WD JTEZU5JR#A5001122
4WD JTEBU5JR#A5002648

I did not have the hash shift on down shift as it describes but it make my 4R drive/shift 100% better!

What is your last 4 of your vin#?

Westwind77

The last 4 of my VIN is 2790. Looks like my VIN is after the one listed and should have the updated ECM. Either way, I will ask about it when I take it in this week for service. Thanks for the info on the issue from the other thread!

To clarify: Isn't it the last 5 of the VIN that matters? I thought I read that in a few places in the TSB thread. (going back some mention 4-digit as well..)

I remember looking at that thread once before and dismissing it; since my truck didn't fall under the 5-digit target VIN sequence. (022647)

EDIT: Carfax.com states digits 12-17 are the production number. So the last 6-digits.

Technically it only affects (for example) the 1st 2,647 4WD 4R's off the production line. I think mine was #746 and yours is #22,647. I said last 4 of the VIN because if you have a 5th number that is not zero you automatically do not qualify :)

I understand, but some may not understand what the 17-digit code means. Technically, its the last 6-digits, cause the zeros matter.

Some may have taken whats written here literally and looked at their last 4(or 5)-digits as asked in the threads. (Like me) In that case, it makes a big difference.

Ha, yes I do see what you are saying. The OP said he bought his in early 10' so I figured that his number would be low enough for him not to fall into the '5th digit' category, that is why I only asked for his last 4.

I don't know if I would call what I am experiencing "tranny lag" or not, it seem like more of a very slight vibration or shudder. But like others are saying its only noticeable under fairly light acceleration and not at all when I accelerate harder which does cause to shift faster and firmer. So maybe it is a little bit of a lag. But I'm not sure it is the same as what some were talking about before because they were talking about it feeling like it was in neutral when getting on the gas while moving like when you accelerate again after going through a turn.

Either way the "tranny lag" TSB would not apply to me since mine is a 2011 with the last 5 of my VIN being 55050. As long as it is not hurting anything, which I don't THINK it is, I will try to not worry about it. Even if I did take it to the dealer it is so hard to notice that they probably wouldn't even notice it and they would end up telling me it is fine anyway.

Plus if what some of you are feeling is the same as mine than it might just be the way these transmissions are under certain circumstances.

cmills, check your transmission fluid level (see manual for procedure) and make sure the dipstick reads full or even a slight bit above full.

Funny you mentioned this...

I just got back my TE from the dealership..here's the back story as to why it was there..

A couple of months ago I was driving to NYC. Stuck in traffic, I sort of "stalled" What happened was I couldn't accelerate. It was as if I was in neutral and someone pushing me. It didn't matter how hard I press on the gas. I could only go 5 mph. The "check engine" light, Slip indicator and the multi-terain select indicator light came on. . I had to pull over, turn off the ignition and start it up again. The lights stayed on but at least I could drive. It would stall again if I would slow down like at a traffic light but it would be fine if I were to keep driving. Anyways, it miraculously "repaired" itself the next day. I brought it in to the dealership and they said it was probably a malfunctioning sensor. So they reset it and told me to come back if it turned on again. Well it did..and both times when I was in downtown Manhattan in stop and go traffic. Long story short, my second visit resulted in the throttle body assembly being replaced.

Hope this helps!!

There was a loose heatshield on the drivers side of the engine ,right by the exhaust manifold in the back of the engine compt.that used to vibrate and make wierd noises sometime. I tried to tighten it up but the bolts were too long(or bad design) and ended up taking it off when I put my headers on.Anybody else have this loose???It is silver with like dimples in it and looks like aluminum.

These A750 transmissions don't have a dipstick. You add fluid til it comes out the overflow plug hole.

Just got back from dealer. ECM was re-flashed and all seems to be working fine. No signs of the 1st to 2nd shift shudder so far. One service manager said they have seen a few T4R's with this issue. A different service associate said he just had one in yesterday with the same issue and that was the 1st one he had personally seen. Until yesterday, he wasn't even aware there was a TSB for this issue. Sounds like this particular service staff needs a to have a little technical pow-wow on some current issues. He seemed surprised I knew about it. This is a great forum. I will post more if any more issues arise...Cheers:surfer:
