Has anyone put a rollcage in a 4th gen 4runner?

Well, yes I have had a few close calls, but I honestly feel a cage should be near the top of the list for anyone who wheels their truck decently hard, rockcrawling or high speed rallying. I want a cage to keep myself safe as best I can. I could slow down, but wheres the fun in that :rockon:

I have built roll cages for many many vehicles. Not a 4Runner, but cars, trucks, SUV's and even a cage for a capsule in a speed boat.

The badge on the grill does not matter to a competent fabricator. Something to properly protect and be used as a daily driver with all seats would run a good 8k-9k. Anything less....well you get what you pay for. You want it bad, you get it bad.

Those are all amazing, great work. And also good advice on the cage. If Im getting one, I am doing it right the first time. Looks like Ill have a lot more saving to do though....

The other thing that you may not have taken into account is seatbelts stretch when you crash to provide a less harsh deceleration to your internal organs. Also, the rollbar piece you will most likely hit will be the one on the side above your door. I'd bet that average size people with seatbelt stretch could easily hit the ceiling which is where that bar would strike you in a side roll impact.

Also, roll cages for race cars are built to protect against high speed (above 80mph) crashes to guarantee the integrity of your safety cage. With any lower speed crash below 50mph, your factory safety cage is probably enough to prevent your vehicle crushing in anywhere. So I really wouldn't worry about a roll cage unless you intend to hit a brick wall going 100mph.

I'd bet that average size people with seatbelt stretch could easily hit the ceiling which is where that bar would strike you in a side roll impact.

I realize the comparison isnt exactly the same, but I rolled my 85 pick up onto its top at zero mph, and it crushed the cab in. I did have an interior cage(not a quality one tho) even the cage bent in slightly. even tho the cage bent, im glad it was there, I know it saved some damaged.

An 85 pickup from what I remember will crush the root in probably a bit over 1x the car's weight, just like all the other trucks of that time frame. They were built with no roof strength because there were no regulations back then.

The 4th gen 4runner has significantly more roof strength than the 1st gen. I believe the current rating for the 4th and 5th gen should be around 18,000lbs, or over 3.5x the car's weight as seen here on the early 5th gen when the IIHS started testing roof crush strength:

Actually, I have taken this into account. If I go through with a cage, Im gonna run 5 or 6 point harnesses on some aftermarket bucket seats. If attached behind the seat to a harness bar built into the cage, the longest part of the seatbelt, the shoulder straps, are around 36". For the Simpson harness I would run (I already have one lying around) they stretch around 7%. This means that they'll stretch a max of about 2.5". That would keep my head pretty far away from the nearest bar, even to the side. I also might go as far as to wear a helmet while really going at it offroad. I wanna go fast, but I dont wanna die, haha.

Also, I am not intending to use this cage ever, but its good insurance. And as nevada said, even slow rollovers can be dangerous.

I run my truck everyday for work far more the decently hard more like down right abusive from high speeds to very hard braking in a moments notice to hitting curbs at 60 plus etc etc. never once did i feel i needed a cage. why because most adjust accordingly to the situation.

Get a car built for that kind of fun IMO. the fun factor isn't worth the amount of money and damage just because i was to **** stupid to slow down on gravel. Common sense isn't so common with some and i surely wouldn't want to be trying to explain how my truck ended upside down or rolled and extra 1000ft from the skid marks to the police. But hey do as you will just record it so we can have a good laugh when it happens

As we say in the moto community take it to the track where u can only hurt yourself and not the public

I plan to eventually start an exo cage. It will be more for tree protection and to serve as a super strong roof rack. The rear doors are funky on our trucks so that will be a challenge. My biggest concern is keeping the roof watertight where we bring the cross braces through the cab behind the front seats
