Has anyone traded in their 4runner for a newer model after only a year? How much did

So I took my 17 Ltd with 7700 miles to my local dealership to have them appraise the value as I’m curious about how well the 4runners hold their value although it has only been a year since I’ve had mine and I also want to trade it in for a 2018 trd off road(but not sure if it’s worth it). They told me that I would lose $6k for what I paid for the limited if I traded it in. What do you guys think?

You are taking about a 20% reduction for a one year old vehicle and it has cost you almost eighty cents per mile to own it for a year. At that rate they would expect a $11,500 reduction if you had driven it for 15,000 miles. All of which is way too rich for my blood! What does the NADA and KBB say?

if planning on trading, only # that means anything is $ amount of check to write to walk out door with new '18. If that is 6k, only you can decide if TRD is worth that to you over the Ltd. I would guess value of either will be nearly same in few short years but that will depend on market - some markets Ltd sell better than TRD.

I’d bet the limited gets hit harder than the other trim levels. My dealer wants $40k for a 2016 Trail Premium. Maybe you should try selling yours on your own.

I traded a 2016 SR5 2WD for a 2017 TRDOR 4WD after having it about a year. Lost $3800 off the price I paid for the SR5. I paid stupid tax because I was impatient and bought the 2WD model even though I really wanted the 4WD. But, I’m very happy now even though my wallet is a bit lighter.

We didn't move forward as I just wanted a trade in value.
I will go to the dealership where I bought my ltd from tomorrow to see how much of a deal they will offer.

That is insane.I think it really depends on the market in your region.

Pretty close to what the dealership is offering but the best case scenario would be an fair trade as the website shows that the high price is the pretty much the same as the MSPR of a 2018 trd off-road model.

Two quick options...

1. Visit your local CarMax. Schedule an appointment. In and out in 30 minutes with zero obligation. I've found they are usually within 1000 of auction values on a clean vehicle.

2. Check out the Edmunds forum. There's a thread called Real World Trade Values. Post your vehicle specs and ZIP. The posters there have access to auction history and can tell you what to expect. I've used them 3 times now. Once they were spot on with my best offer. The other times they were 500 high and 1000 low (I wheeled and dealed on that one though).

So you are actually talking about it costing $8 to $9K to get into the 18 TRD from the 17 Limited. I cannot see where that is a good deal.

I traded my FJ at the same dealer I bought it at to get into my TRD Pro. But it was a 5 year old vehicle in good condition. I only lost $5K (from what I paid for it new) on a 5 year old FJ.

What options of the TRD are you missing on your Limited? Suspension? Maybe it would be cheaper for you to modify your Limited to get some of the options you are desiring.

I think he means he's out 2-3k to walk out with it. The Limited had a higher price than the TRD, he said OR, not PRO. So he's down $6k from the Limited price, but the TRD is $3k off the Limited's price, and he'd have to pay the other $3k.

Carmax offered me $1,500 less than I paid with 9k miles on my 17. I was curious about the trade in value and I see them selling TRD Off Road premiums and Trails for more. I do think the Limited and SR5 do take a harder hit.

Another thing to think about, you've presumably taken a $6k hit on the Limited already. If you drive it for another 5-6 months, I doubt that # would change at all. You are pretty low mileage, which doesn't help matters in that they have to discount it below what they are selling new 18s for, and then still make a profit, so that is where your trade in value is coming from.

Drive it a little longer for free and do the deal in July when they are hurting for sales, that is if you can find a truck worth trading it on.
