Hayden 678 Transmission Cooler

It seems that the most popular choices for addtional transmission cooling are various offering from B&M and Tru-Cool. These tend to be around 70-90 dollars. I've had a few of these in my Amazon Wishlist for almost a year...

The Hayden 678, at about half the price, and rated at 24,000 GVWR, 5,000 lbs towing, looks very appealing.

What am I missing? It's only .75" thick too. It not a low pressure drop unit, or at least it's not advertised as such...

Summit has it for less than 40 bucks. Tempting.

If you have this transmission cooler, please share your experiences or impressions. I'm thinking of running it in series. I replaced the radiator about a 1,000 miles ago...

Thanks.

Got one, number one rule, don't run it alone, even in SF cool weather.

They're all going to work, in colder weather some folks like the models with a cold weather valve.

They're effective but learning to use OD-OFF is even more effective on hills, mountain passes. Luck and enjoy the Runner. :cowboy:

Realistically, you can never have too much cooling for trans fluid, the major killer of trans fluid is heat. Less heat, longer life.

I have yet to pick up my T4R but I am in the middle of a trans cooler on my other project (1998 Volvo S70 T5) and have been doing a lot of research on trans coolers over the past few months.

A lot of the difference in coolers comes down to the type of cooler (tube and fin, stacked plate etc)

I ended up going with a Derale cooler with AN fittings and would have gone even bigger if I had the space. I fully intend to install a trans cooler on the 4Runner I'm picking up (04 V8) and from the research I've done, the best cooler is the biggest one you can fit and there isn't a major reason not to run it in series with the existing one because that just adds further cooling capabilities.

I'm running a Hayden cooler too. But it's the larger version: Hayden 679.

I bypassed the radiator. The normal operating temp for the ATF in my truck is around 150 degrees. When the ambient air temperature gets up to 115 - 120 degrees here in the summer, the ATF runs closer to 175 degrees.

At these temperatures the radiator would only ever be adding heat to the transmission, so even when I installed a new radiator a few years ago I kept it bypassed.

I initially bought the 678, then returned it and exchanged for the B&M 70264. I forgot why I returned it though :(. The Hayden is a lot larger in area than the B&M (11 x 9.5 vs. 11 x 5.75), so maybe that was the reason. I spent a lot of time messing around and mocking up the fit of the the different coolers, make sure you do that too before committing.

I think in the end, I really liked how the 70264 fit in my truck, how the hoses lined up, etc. Also, I really like the low pressure bypass, I think it's a good thing to have for cooler climates. The few bucks you save now will be forgotten soon enough, so focus on the longterm benefits instead!

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies. I can appreciate such considerations as fitment and how things line-up, like hoses, etc.

I'm still leaning towards an in series install, but at times I do think of the bypass route...

I'd definitely recommend the series install, especially given the new radiator you have!

Thanks Leon. Did the 1.5" thickness of the B&M 70264 make for any fitment issues? I imagine not. I see others at .75". I'll scope out the space tomorrow...

In addition to more weight on my 4Runner, I'll be pulling a trailer. After reading a few threads on transmission coolers, I'm inclined to get the highest rated unit (BTU or GVWR). Looking at the B&M 70266...

The TrueCool required changing how the horn was mounted.

I did relocate one of the horns to make use of that mounting hole for a bracket. But otherwise it fit in very nicely.

Now, ask me how much fun I had trying to wedge in the Landcruiser cooler that I originally got, that was not happening (on the left):

Thank you both. Not sure if "Like" is working these days, but suffice it to say, I've been clickin' on it...

Not so worried about a horn as that will come-out when I do the Cadillac horns (A,C, D & F).

The photo helps.

The 70264 is:

11" x 5-3/4" x 1-1/2"

The 7266 is:

11" x 8" x 1-1/2"

The inlet and outlet, both on the 11" side, would seemingly make for no differences in the two with respect to hose routing. I believe it was Leon who said earlier that he found the 70264 desirable in that regard...

At a little over 2" wider, it will be a tighter fit in that space. Two dimensionally, the 7266 is about the size of a sheet of paper. I'll take a look later today...

Just for reference the thinner 3/4" Hayden cooler does fit nicely behind the front support member.

Dimensions for the Hayden 679: 11" x 11.625" x 0.75"

Using the included zip ties make it easy to snug right up against the condenser core for better air flow too.

This picture shows the in/out ports oriented down, but the final resting place was turned 90 degrees with ports on the passenger side like normal.

Just as I was about to pop the hood to scope-out the area for a transmission cooler, the mail truck arrives. One item was a prospectus for a recent stock/ETF purchase, and it contained cardboard-like like piece, these dimensions.

Very close in size to the B&M 70266... After some quick positioning I determined that it should fit on the passenger side.

Flowmaster has a discount code that lowered the price to 99 bucks (free shipping), so I just ordered it. No plumbing included though...

Just wanted to get closure on this thread.

I am running the 678 and have been for 11 years with ZERO issues. I bypassed the radiator and even though we do get some colder temps in the Alabama winters, it has never caused an issue.

I am on the original tranny (A340F) and never want to risk the pink milkshake and this is why I bypassed the radiator. The cooler (678) is more than sufficient to cool the tranny fluid.

When I check the transmission fluid (running Mobil1 Syntethic Transmission fluid) it looks absolutely new. I also run the inline Magnafine filter. With almost 310K miles on the original transmission, the transmission runs great....no slipping or clunking. Shift points are fine, smooth shifting. I would recommend the Hayden 678. It has been a winner on my rig.

Good to hear BD. I communicated with someone here who bypassed with the B&M 70266, and it worked like a champ.

I am seriously considering a bypass with the B&M 70266; and would monitor temps very closely with the SGII. If I happen to experience a scenario where temps are seemingly too high, I'll change-up the connection to involve the radiator (factory transmission fluid cooler).

Where did you place the Magnafine filter?

Hey guys thank you so much for the info. I have a v6 2009 4runner. I can’t figure out which B&M cooler would fit for my vehicle. Having said that, I think (and I could be wrong) that it really doesn’t matter which B&M to add? Or are they very vehicle specific?

Any chance I can get a way with the BM 70266? Assuming the fit ent isn’t an issue?

Thanks all

As I recall, that's the one I installed. If so, zero fitment issues for me...

You have a 4th Gen 4Runner. This is the 3rd Gen section so most of us here can't tell you for certain what will and won't fit on your vehicle.

Here's a 4th gen specific google search you can try: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Atoyota-4Runner.org%2F4th-gen-t4rs%2F+transmission+cooler&newwindow=1&rlz=1C1QJDB_enUS784US793&sxsrf=ALeKk01Gh0NKdYbjF4orfasl0EsP3SJxEw%3A1629741789595&ei=3eIjYezdI4SPtAbmsp_QDA&oq=site%3Atoyota-4Runner.org%2F4th-gen-t4rs%2F+transmission+cooler&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAM6BwgAEEcQsANKBAhBGABQ0BlYxh9gjiJoAXACeACAAUuIAfwDkgEBOJgBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=gws-wiz&ved=0ahUKEwiswMaj3cfyAhWEB80KHWbZB8oQ4dUDCA4&uact=5
