Those amounts look high to me, from what I hear and see on TV and the news I feel many are doing it on a lot less. Not all spend their money wisely and make good decisions on financial matters, good decisions on what you spend today will payoff later in life.

I see many people who seem to be living extravagantly on a lot less. So I question the statistics. Yes it takes a lot more than it did a few years ago. Still I see the 30 somethings with 2 kids and drive late model nice cars, take nice vacations, eat out more than we do. WE don't live in a wealthy community, but I would say a bit above average. House prices are close to the mean for our metro area. Slightly above. The 30 somethings that live across the street have a dog walker and a Nany. 2 late model mid priced cars. Neither have what I would expect to be extremely high paying job, but certainly good jobs. So what my little window on the world suggests is many are living well above on well below what that suggests.

Exactly, "comfortable" is a completely nebulous concept. My wife and I live in Missouri, and make a good bit less than 202K a year, and I feel perfectly comfortable.

Exactly. There are a lot of factors involved in comfort, and even more in achieving it efficiently.

It's funny when I mention my vacations at work, and nearly half the people there assume I must be spending a couple thousand to head out for a week, when the reality is that I'm nearly always going backpacking: cost of entry can be as high as you're willing to go, but the cost of a trip once you have the gear is pretty much negligible other than gas.

I did a week in west Texas a couple years ago, and my total cost for entry and camping fees at two State and one National park barely hit $100 after discounts.
