head bolts

Hey all my 3.4L heads will be coming home tomorrow from the machine shop. Do you guys install the head bolts dry or with a little oil on the threads and the bolt head/washer? Thanks

they say that the head bolts are reusable but for about 30 bucks from LC Eng. a new set of OEM head bolts seems like cheap insurance to me.
 
I was going to say you should look it up in the FSM because there is a difference between wet and dry torque. Friction uses a lot of the torque up so the engineers design and specify torque amounts depending on the situation. But I was bored so I did it for you... Get'em wet!

Also be sure to review the torquing procedure and make sure that you are torquing correctly. It is a long process, but very necessary. Oil shouldn't be unnecessary. If the bolts don't go in smooth, then you need to clean out the threads.

No sense in spending a couple hundred dollars on a head job to skimp out on the bolts.
 
A little oil never hurts when you're tourquing something that tight.

I always do it dry.:boink:. Remember that if you oil a fastener that you need to REDUCE your torque by 15%-30%. So, if your tightening a 3/4" Gr. 8 bolt to 380 ft. lbs. (Dry) you will have achieved that value at only 280 ft. lbs.
 
You should never re-use any TTY (torque to yield) bolts (which is what the head bolts are on a 3.4). Once they are tightened down the 1st time, they will not go back to their original dimensions. They are weakened by the time you take them out and putting them back in is asking for HG issues later on.

Never reuse a torque-to-yield bolt. Because the bolts are designed to stretch once, stretching them a second time may stretch them beyond their yield point causing the bolt to break. They are one-time use bolts, so throw the old bolts away and buy new ones.
TTY bolts are usually installed dry. Do not apply any oil, grease, assembly lube or sealer on the bolt threads. The reason why is because lubricants reduce friction when a bolt is tightened. This actually increases the torque load on the bolt, which may overload and stretch a TTY bolt too far, causing it to break.

FSM says to apply a light coat of oil on the threads and washer surfaces.
