Head Gasket Question.

Hello Everyone. I have an 04 4x4 Limited w/164k and my head gasket needs to be replaced. Confirmed with the mechanic today after some tests.

Anyways I need to lean on you guy's expertise. I've been doing a lot of research and I've decided on rebuilding instead of replacing.

My first question is about part numbers. I found good info on this from other threads but I'd like to know if it is safe to use updated head gaskets from 06 and on (part #s: 11115-31031 & 11116-31011)

or do I need to use oem 04 head gaskets? The reason I ask is because the online sources I've found that sell the parts are still selling the old part number (11115-31030) and I read on this forum that it is the cause of the HG blowing!

Also...Does anyone recommend a source for the right kit with the updated parts number?

Second question is about what I should address while I'm in there. I want to keep this 4R for a long time and would like to take it on camping trips this year so I need reliability. Can you guys share what parts I should change while i'm in there besides gaskets and stuff like that?

Third question is do I need to worry about the block? I've always read that if you rebuild you might as well rebuild the entire thing but I've been through many threads and it doesnt seem like many people do that on here. I've only been seeing machine work on heads and HG, and other gasket replacements after that.

You may have it repaired already. But I got a Fel-Pro Head Gasket (#HS26330PT). It is the improved design. And new head bolts. Fel-Pro was recommended by pro mechanic.
While replacing HG I also installed new timing chain, VVT sprocket, water pump, belt, all pulleys and tensioner. Compression tests were very good.

I also replaced the radiator and hoses. After the HG was replaced it was over-heating. It was because the previous owner had been putting an additive in coolant to patch the HG issue. This resulted in stopping circulation thru radiator and causing it to rupture at seam. Flush out entire coolant system very well. Flushed out chunks of this putty type substance. Also installed a trans cooler because I plan on a fair amount towing.

2500 miles later its running great. I plan to keep her for a long time.

(05 v6 HG failure at 183000.)

Hey man. Thanks for the reply. I looked into the timing chain and was wondering if you also changed the cam chains along with the main chain? I'm tempted to get the felpro head gasket but was wondering if oem is better. The head bolts I'm def going to pick up.

How much did all of these parts set you back? I looked up the VVT sprocket and wow it is a pretty penny.

I'm definitely going to do all of this. Do you by chance still have the part numbers for these parts?
