Head gasket solution

I bought my 1995 4Runner with a blown head gasket. I had the heads machined and all valves adjusted correctly. New head bolts and a OEM head gasket set. I also bought Doug Thorley headers to get rid of the stock crossover pipe hoping this will eliminate the head gasket failure in the future. Is there other reasons the head gasket fails or will the headers and the good quality head gasket get rid of this problem? I really do not want to do this again.

I've had my fair share of the "bhg syndrome" as most of the supra guys call it! One of the things that most folks forget to do after the head gasket replacement is to "burp" the cooling system.

I can't tell if you have a 22RE or a 3VZE, as you seem to talk about the crossover pipe, which the 4 cylinder never had, but you only seem to say head gaskeT (not plural) and header(again, not plural), so I can't really say how to burp the v6 engine.

If it is a 22re, then get the front of the truck up in the air as high as you can, let it warm up with the rad cap off, turn the heater to full heat and wait for all the air to come out of the system.

A steep driveway AND ramps would probably suffice. If after you do this, drive around and flip from cold to hot on the heater, if you hear slushing or gurgling noises, you have not gotten all the air out of the system, do it again till you never ever hear that sound again!

That little bit of air stuck in the system does NOT always come out, and if there's enough of it, the coolant can cavitate inside the engine and not get to the radiator, overheating the engine and popping another head gasket! I blew a perfectly good head gasket once a long time ago just because of not doing this to my supra, blew the damned gasket within 2 hours of replacing it!

Do you know what caused the last one to blow? Overheat or lean condition? If lean condition, I'd get the injectors serviced too while you have it all apart. Doesn't take long to send them in for a full clean and balance/calibration. I have used RC injectors several times on different toyotas of mine, and always had great results. The local shop in Portland I used once was more money and didn't seem to be any better than RC, and they took almost as long to get 'em done!

Ha sorry didn't even relize I did not mention the engine. I have the 3vze.
 
I think another weak link is the torque to yield head bolts. A lot of guys abandon those in favor of putting studs in the block.
 
I would agree with that! I've only rebuilt one 3VZE and did NOT enjoy myself one bit! If you can afford the set, throw some ARP studs in there, but be warned, they are 240 bucks for the kit!

Still, I consider that good insurance against fixing another blown head gasket! TTY bolts seem to baffle me, I would rather know EXACTLY what each bolt is at when I install them, not some crazy "after some torque number, turn another x degrees"!

At least with studs, you run them down into the block, no torquing them there. All the torque goes on at the nut, which means the studs are properly seated without worries of anything foreign in the threads and no way for incorrect torque readings from hydro-lock if you put a little too much assembly lube!

You gonna run dual exhausts with the Thorleys? Or, are you going to put another crossover under the tranny somewhere? There's tons of talk on this over at yotatech!

Guess I was lucky, got rid of our '95 4 runner before we had the bhg syndrome, although the dealer did the recall for the head gaskets, even though we didn't have any issues at the time. It ran like crap after they did, absolutely zero power, we ended up trading it in for a pos Durango! Went from bad to worse on that deal!!!
 
Not necessarily, but from what I've read, those who are using the studs seem to think the more even torque on the heads are keeping them from blowing head gaskets.

I think doing that AND eliminating that stupid crossover pipe would completely eliminate the overheating in #6 cylinder, as well as #1 getting too much backpressure and popping the gasket.

This is why I asked where the head gasket blew, that would give some insight on what actually happened. If it blew near #6, then we can "assume" its because of the excessive heat buildup from the crossover pipe. If its #1 where it blew, its probably the backpressure holding way too much heat. Again, we're assuming here.
If it blew elsewhere, then there's the next place to start searching around for an explanation, but having a properly, and more importantly, evenly, torqued head will allow less issues with the bhg syndrome!
