Head Room??

Hi All,
I have been wavering in the SUV market, looking at 4Runners, Range Rover Sports, Cayenne S, and even considering new 2007 FJ.

Drove a 2006 Ltd 4x4, V8 and found headroom was sparse to say the least.

If I lowered the seat enough to clear the ceiling I felt like I was sitting in my 911.

Love the reliability and feeling otherwise.

BTW, I am 6' tall.

Went through the same thing back in fall of 03. But I was looking at the Land Rover Discovery not the RR - way out of my price range. You could get 2 runners and make one trail dedicated for that $. I did like the Disco but the dealer was 45 min away, I also tested a new Durango and 2000 and older Land Cruisers. I found that the head room was a bit better in the Runner with the sun roof. Could be just the feel of the glass- don't know but wife agreed. Check out one with a sun roof and see if you can tell a diff.
 
I am 6'1" and have no issues at all with head room in my 05 ---- My seat is up high and I have at least a good several inches above my head.
 
I similarly have an '05 Sport withOUT the sunroof. The biggest gripes that I have about the design of the 4th Gen (as compared to the 3rd Gen) are as follows:

1. The seats are much lower in the 4th Gen. It feels like I'm driving a car. On the 3rd Gen, my legs were not as extended and thus more comfortable to drive.

2. The seats on the 3rd Gen (sport seats) had much more side bolster support. On the 4th Gen, there is not as much bolster support.

3. The roof is much more streamlined on the 4th Gen than the 3rd Gen which , I would believe, is attributable to less headroom?

4. On my 3rd Gen that HAD a sunroof, yes, it took away a noticable amount of headroom in the front seats, but not as much in the back seats. On the 4th Gen, the sunroof takes a noticeable amount of head room for the back passengers. I would NEVER buy a 4th Gen with a sunroof.

I'm 6'3", and have no problems with headroom in my 4R WITHOUT a sunroof. When I was test driving a 4R with a sunroof, my hair was touching the ceiling. Moral of the story, check out a 4R w/ out a sunroof.
 
6' nuthin (32" inseam) and sunroof. I have no problems with headroom.

One of the car rags complained about lack of headroom in the 4th gens.
 
Well I'm 6'1" and this was THE biggest sticking point when I was deciding which vehicle to buy.

When looking for a midsized SUV I compared alot of vehicles... Pathfinder, Trailblazer, Durango, Volvo XC90, Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc.

I loved the 4Runner right away but held off buying one because I wasn't sure it had enough room. To get comfortable I felt I had to put the seat all the way down and all the way back. This position was comfortable but it left me with the seat at it's maximum adjustment.

I found that many of the midsized SUV's were similar in this regard. I had to put the seat all the way (or almost) back to get enough legroom. In fact, I started looking at Fullsized SUV's but while I fit in them okay, they were all far too big for my needs (single guy).

I finally took another look at the 4Runner and realized it wasn't that much smaller than any of the others in many ways. I even measured actual room with a tape measure on the final few vehicles I was picking.

When it was all over the 4Runner (with sunroof) won out over all the others due to overall room, features, and performance.

And I couldn't be happier! :D
I still keep my seat all the way back but have raised it a little. I still have enough headroom to place my fist over my head, which is my roominess test.
 
I have heard people piss and moan about the shoulder room - cab width as 4Runners are narrow at least up through the 3rd gens.
Never a problem for me 5'10 175 lbs. I'm glad for the narrow width especially parking etc.

This has been a sporadic copmplaint since the 4th generation 'Runners hit the market. Frankly, I don't understand it, as we own an '03 Limited w/moonroof, I'm 6'2" with a 33" inseam and I have no trouble with headroom at all

You might check out the Lexus version of the 4Runner. Same great powertrain, same great build quality and reliability and a roof that's 2" higher.

I agree, the GX has much more head room and you dont have to feel like you are sitting on the floor.
 
More Headroom Please

I am 6'4 and there is not enough head room for me in the 5th gen model . Yes, I can fit if I lean the seat back, develop back problems, and lose my backseat, but there should be no reason for this given the size of the SUV.

And, the passenger seat, forget about it. Do not fit.

Toyota, please upgrade headroom in future models. PLEASE.

You should probably post about that in the fifth gen section. [MENTION=87687]LTDSC[/MENTION] did a seat mod to fix these issues, search around for his post, I can't find it.

And he's way taller than you.

moved me down a good 1-3" depending on seat set up.
