Head unit radio question..

I have a pioneer avh 3300. For those who have aftermarket head units, have you used any type of aftermarket radio antenna? My radio hasn't been very good and I'd like to hook up a stronger antenna if I could.

you can get an antena signal amplifier for like $20, but I have a question for you, are you using both antena plugs into a Y adapter, or just 1?
 
What amplifier are you talkin about? And I'm not sure, I didn't do the install the first time. Why do you ask?
 
Does that cable provide power to the antenna RF amplifier as well ? I don't think it does but bet someone here knows for sure.

The reason I ask, is because there are 2 antenas, I'm betting the shop that installed your radio only used 1, this is where I got the part numbers for the y adapter that I ordered, check out this thread

There is a ton of information on the diversity antennas. Obviously people have different opinions of what is good or not, but connecting the two did nothing for me. The signal was still bad, and if anything it was worse with them connected. There is an internal amplifier, but it is not used on any wiring harness that I have found. I tried power it, but it didn't change anything except that my stereo wouldn't turn off. I assume it isn't as simple as powering the #13 pin.

My plan when I finally get around to ordering my new speakers is to get the metra window antenna because I really need better reception than what I am getting. I am really surprised that metra or scosche don't make a diversity tuner adapter that would allow you to use the stock configuration. It doesn't seem like any after market stereo companies have any interest in producing those types of product. You would think that they would since they are making them for the OE market.

I have to agree with Sungod, I went through the trouble of getting/installing the "Y" adapter and I found there to be no improvement at all in FM reception and my overall impression was that it was a bit worse so I went back to just the single (standard size) plug.

There is circuitry in the OEM HU's that utilizes the diversity antenna to advantage and my FM reception was really pretty good (although nowhere near as good as my Tundra with a regular mast antenna).

At this point, I'm ready to install that Tundra antenna on my 4Runner; just coming to terms with that big hole I gotta drill in her to do it.

Yes, please let us know how it goes. I've heard mixed reviews about connecting both. I almost bought the parts when you first posted this thread but OHP's negative review made me change my mind.

Have you already got the radio out? It should be back in there with all the rest of the wiring. I remember seeing it when I changed mine, just had to tuck it out of the way.
 
I haven't taken it out yet becuase I don't know when today it's going to be here. Going to a Dave Matthews concert tonight and I'm not gonna do the install if it gets here after 3.. If it does,I'll just do it tomorrow
 
I've got to be honest...I haven't noticed a single difference after adding the Y-harness and connecting the rear antenna. I live about 2 blocks west from a radio station in Fort Worth that prides itself on only broadcasting west. "It doesn't want to cater to the wannabe Texans that live in Dallas...their words, not mine!" Before, whenever I pulled into my above ground parking garage, it started to get a little fuzzy. After the connection...the exact same thing. Same thing with driving around town. No difference. Just my .02.

I meant to ask about this, one of the antenna wires didnt have the clip thing that the other one did so I couldn't put it in the Y adapter. Where can I buy one of those
