Headgasket Blew - Putting in a Rebuild - Anything else I should do?

Hello All,

I JUST Picked up this 95 4runner a month ago and now the headgasket is blown. After going back and forth the truck has a lot of new-ish parts on it and so I'm going to have a shop put in a rebuilt engine which is basically a completely rebuild long block minus the manifolds.

Is there anything I should do while the engine is out? The previous owner claims the clutch is new, but I might change it anyway. Anything else? Truck has about 230K miles on it

Here's what's recently done thus far related to engine
Radiator/Thermostat
Clutch Fan
Tune Up - wires, cap, rotor
Front CV Axles

I dont have any mechanical advice for you, sorry. But if it were me, one of the very first things i would do with the motor out and knowing a new one is going in, CLEAN THE ENGINE BAY :banana:

Knock sensor pigtail

I recently also had a rebuilt motor put in. Three strong suggestions:
1. knock sensor pigtail
2. pcv valve
3. the U- shaped water hose

Willy - Thanks for the tips. Did you change the knock sensor too? Also which U-shaped water hose are you talking about?

And the PCV Value you can do easily with motor in the car yah?

The knock sensor itself is bulletproof- its the wire and pigtail that crack and go bad.
The PCV valve is a must while the upper plenum is off:welcome:

Just a word of advice, I went through the same thing by putting in a new rebuilt 3.0 engine in. The place that did it was known to be good at the time. But later to find out the engine rebuild was shotty and the gasket blew at 30K. I highly recommend doing the 3.4 swap! I am in the process of one right now. I have a friend that works for toyota that is doing the job and doing it right. It is costing me less then 2500. I may have been lucky to know the right people, but we all know the 3.0 is slow and the 3vze is not well built =\. Good luck with whatever you decide.
