headlight chime

I just picked-up a used 2003 4Runner, and I am thrilled with it. I noticed tonight that if I shut it off there is no warning chime when the headlights are left on. Is this normal, or is there something wrong?

It is perfectly normal. There is no headlight chime because the lights will go off even if you leave them on. They will go off automatically after 30 seconds of after you push the lock button a second time on the remote.

What if you are not using the Toyota keyless entry? I have installed an aftermarket alarm and therefore am not using the Toyota remote. Will they still go off eventually? Just curious.

The lights should still go off after 30 seconds. I don't know if they will still go off with the remote. Does your new system use the Toyota remote? I don't think the lights going off has anything to do with the keyless entry system. It is 30 seconds after the driver door is opened.

That's my understanding too with the caveat that this only applies if the lights were turned on while the car was running. If you switch the lights on with the car off, they won't automatically shut off in 30 seconds ... but I believe they will still switch off before your battery drains.

I have never tested that feature, but I think they go off 30 minutes after the car is turned off no matter what. You must turn the lights on with the truck running or key in the on position to enable that feature.

It works with my SR5. Not sure about the 30 minute thing, though..

On the SR5 and Sport, there is no auto on feature for the headlights. On the other hand, all of the models (SR5, Sport, Limited) have the auto off feature where the lights either go off when you open the driver door, 30 seconds after the driver door is opened, or when you hit the lock button twice (Toyota keyless entry). The dealer has to program it the way you want it. From the factory, all of them come with the lights going off 30 seconds after the driver door is opened. The 30 minute thing is a feature on all models as well. The purpose of that is to not let the battery drain down. The extra feature that the Limited has is the auto on feature. That is just an extra selector on the lights switch that turns the lights on when it gets dark out. I hope that clears up everything for you.
