headlight cover/cap

Has anyone jacked up their headlight from the shi**y bulb cover/dust cap ?
I have retrofitted lights and swapped bulbs to see if I had a bad bulb and could not for the life of me get that stupid cover back on, now the cover goes on with a gap on one side that lets water in the housing !!!

Why did they change from the rubber boot to this style ? :faint:

The retrofit has nothing to do with the dust covers

so you have retro lights that dont fit well w/ the aftermarket hids and dont fit with the old halogen bulbs either? how many watts were your hid bulbs? 35watts?55watts?

Seeing as i just installed HID's a couple days ago i can say it took me a minute to get the dust caps back on. I had the same thing where one tab didn't want to pop back in easily. That said, after some fiddling and cursing it went in and is secured just fine. If yours isn't fitting, its probably operator error. I prefer these dust caps to the crappy rubber boots i've had on other cars. Once its on, it is staying on. Try greasing the o-ring on the cover, it seemed to be what caused the difficulty. That tight fit makes me happy though, knowing the headlight is sealed very well.

Are you talking about the dust cap that you need to remove to access the headlight and turn signal bulbs?

If so... I believe they are keyed (I may be wrong but I took the covers off Sunday). Meaning that the notches are not evenly spaced out. Rotate the cap 90* and see if that works. If it doesn't, continue rotating 90* until it fits.

I know its bad to assume but here it goes anyway. Most OEM HID's are no more than 35watts and there's been many guys, not limited to 4runners, that have run 55 watt aftermarket HID. The extra wattage/heat in some cases have caused headlights to melt. (true story, google it). And of course if you're using a cheap HID kit, who knows how well voltage, wattage, heat is regulated. Too bad he won't come back to confirm.
