Headlight Questions

Hello Everyone,

I've got a few questions related to headlights and foglights. I'd like the headlights to be brighter, and throw more light on the road and surroundings. I've read all about silverstar ultras, piaa's, and other bulbs. I've also read about HID's (not too keen on the legality issues). However, I am still left scratching my head about a few things.

Subject: 1999 4runner Limited

1- Are there separate bulbs for high beam and low beam usage?

2- Are HIR bulbs an option with 3rd Gens?

3- Do harnesses need to be replaced if I go with an ultrastar or hella bulb?

4- Any other cost effective solutions anybody has to increasing light output?

The 3rd gen 4runners use the same H4 bulb for both the lows and highs... The downside of this is bc the low beam is 55w (typical of all cars) but the high beam is only 60w (compared to typically 65w).

ok so i can say that the Silverstars are brighter than stock though i cant say exactly how much better the Silverstar ultras are.... My friend and I originally got them bc we dont like the yellow color of the stock bulbs and well it was great bc it is whiter and brighter. Def a win win in our opinion!

You dont have to change the wiring harness for Silverstars or 35w HIDs (only if 55w). I can say that ive been running my silverstars on all 8 of my lights facing front for about 5 years now (replaced bulbs once or twice) and no wiring has had any damages.

HIDs are only good if u are willing to fork out the money to do it correctly with projectors. Without the projectors ull possibly blind ppl but primarily u wont get good output of lighting bc the light is bouncing around the housing so its more or less shooting out random light everywhere on the street.

dude those are so bright... 80w for low beam? wow i would get in so much trouble with those. The cops around my house are d!@ks and i got two warnings awhile back bc they said my silverstars looked way brighter than 55w.

Ha yeah that isn't cool that they jam you up for that sort of thing. I work for a PD too, nor would I bust balls for properly aimed headlights that run a higher wattage than stock. They work for the roads I drive on.

yeah, I think where they are aimed is more important than the wattage...

cop would have to be mean to ticket you for a bright light aimed down...
 
lol ya its just bc the cops where i live are jerks. Like i live in a small city basically next to SA and they give more tickets on their 2 mile stretch they patrol then all of SA. They used to have crown vics and now they traded them in for 3 chargers and im assuming they give the tickets bc they just got a new HQ and are looking to get more chargers for patrol.

They pull ppl over for the most randomest things around my neighborhood.

Sounds like Littleton, Highlands Ranch...

The Littleton police and Douglas County Sheriffs have WAAAAYYY to much money.

Douglas County, they have a zillion undercover cars... one of them I saw was a redish looking Chevy Tahoe/Suv WITH A SKI RACK...

thats bad, when they spend the extra couple hundred to put a SKI RACK ON A UNDERCOVER POLICE CAR so it looks like your moms grocery getter! GRRR!

Littleton has a black F-150, and then there standard marked cars have these satellite dish things on them that were super expensive and no one knows what they do...
they will pull you over for anything!! anything!
 
Ya they have a lifted forest green surburban that looks like a mudder's truck. It has a 6" lift on 37s and has the surco roof rack and some other stuff but ppl nvr see it coming til its too late. The cop who drives it looks like hes 18-21 too.

Ya dude where i went to high school the cops had WAY too much money too they decided to get repoed cars and mod them so u wouldnt know the diff; lots of lifted trucks (chevys and fords) and i watched my friend get a ticket from a cop who got a repoed ferrari as his patrol vehicle. Freakin nuts!

Thanks for the input. However, HIR bulbs are entirely different than HID technology.
 
Ya i know.. i didnt mean for each separation to correspond to the numbered questions. I was just trying to answer the questions that i knew bc i have no idea wat HIR is or means.

You can use HIR not sure who makes them still though.

I still have stock wiring but I should be getting the roger brown upgraded harness soon. And yes they work much better in my opinion throws light further and brighter. Ive had HID, silverstars, all those lighting options and these are my favorite still.

So, just to clarify, do I need 2 pair or just one pair. I'm still not sure if each headlight requires 2 bulbs, or just one...

Well, in the time it took you write that post you could have easily gone to your vehicle and actually looked at the headlight. You can clearly see that there is one bulb per light.

Each headlight requires only one bulb, that is due in part to the dual filaments in each H4 bulb. So you have two headlights all you need are 2 H4 bulbs and that will replace both high and low beams.

Really? I've lived in this area (and work in HR) since '96 and had a very modded Eclipse for most of those years (illegal tint,no front plate,loud exhaust,clear corners) and I've never been pulled over for anything but speeding and just last month I got pulled over for speeding and I have illegal tint on my Runner and the cop never even mentioned the windows. I think Colorado cops for the most part are pretty tolerant unless you are asking for it.
